Was also at Donington in '79 when he crashed in practice and couldn't race but did a lap of honour for the fans. What a man!

We travelled up to Donington, two up and with camping gear on my 400/4, only to hear that Hailwood had crashed during practice that day. We were really looking forward to seeing him in the same race as Sheene the following day. Still two of my greatest heroes. The applause was staggering when Hailwood did a lap of honour in an open-top car, I think it was a Bugatti but not sure.
Ron Haslam and Steve Parrish also raced at that meeting.
