When I got mine new in Aug 2006 it did the same popping on the overrun, its normal and only really goes away when the bike is really warmed up eg after 20-30 miles. Fitting Termi silencers got rid of it, I think its caused by the catalyser? Nothing to worry about anyway.
Is it brand new and has it been modified in any way? Have you ridden through heavy rain recently? The only time mine played up was when I got a thorough soaking and water got into one of the wiring blocks.
Even if not new I assume its under warranty.
