Thanks for the suggestions, I didn't get any useful response from the dealers, so I decided to investgate. It seems that Ducati decided not to put the copper sealing gasket between the exhaust pipe and head on the horizontal cylinder! I've wrapped some aluminium cooking foil around the pipe (as a temporary measure) and the bike now runs beautifully!!
