You are not alone Pete - I had my head stuck up my backside about a year ago, just got back from holls and used to putting petrol in the bike so drove my diesel scenic to the garage - and filled up with petrol !!!!

I ran it for about ten miles and wondered why it had no grunt before I realised what I'd done. Luckily I was right by a garage which had stayed open late for another customer and they pumped out my tank & filled me up with diesel. It doesn't seem to have had any long term effects on the car engine - only on my pride.

As an aside, they didn't charge me for getting rid of the contaminated fuel because - you gotta believe this - there was a guy living opposite the garage who drives a tank - yep, a sherman type battle wagon! - and it runs on a mixture of diesel and petrol, so he was happy to get £60 of free fuel.
