Hi
Geoff,
This is quite a common thing with the Mono rear subframe, specially the early 'plain alloy' versions....
Like
Blackie has mentioned the standard rear tail can is ultra heavy and the plate at the rear of the Mono subframe is quite thin and the two help form stress fractures along the welds, thus causing the plate to eventually break away......
If your bike is still in warrenty then that would be the first line to follow, otherwise I would take it to a local established metal fabricator for them to re-weld a new plate and strengthen the joins......this will only cost around £25-£30 for a cash in hand job...certainly a lot cheaper than going to the extent of purchasing another secondhand subframe.....
Ps.....
Message to all 749/999 owners.....
Geoff has raised a good point here so it would be worth checking the plate at the rear of your Mono subframe for any evidence of stress/fractures..........
