Sidi Black Rain Evo
I think it's time to throw my 20 year old steelies away and invest in some new boots. (Well not actually throw them away - more put them out to retirement in the garage for the occasional use). Anybody tried Sidi's Black Rain Evo's out? Good, bad, indifferent, or indeed something better you've found in the same sort of price bracket?

havent tried them out in the rain as i can't get my fat calves into them but they do have a good reputation.
i was very excited that Sidi were doing a race boot lined with goretex (either the Vertigo or the Corsa, can't remember) until i found out that they're not doing them in little sizes
it is worth hunting around for Oxtar end of line boots, they do lots of goretex lined boots and are currently getting rid of all stock with the Oxtar name on as they were subject to legal action as the name/logo was too similar to Alpinestars....so they are now being named TCX or something similar.
anyway, the point is that there are some good deals to be had if you can find them. on the Girlsbike2 stand at the Excel show, we were selling goretex lined boots for £45!

A friend of mine who comutes from Portsmouth to West London every day had a pair of the Black Rains and they leaked. He took them back and got another pair, they leaked and so did the pair after that so he got his money back and bought some Oxtar boots, which he's very happy with.

I have some Sidi Black Rain Evos - excellent on comfort, durability and waterproofness, but obviously not as protective as a full-on race boot.

ive got a pair of black rains and they're relatively comfy, not oo great on the waterproof front, the water tends to seep through after prolonged riding in the rain but they do dry out quickly.
next boot purchase to be some gore tex vertigos ;-)

Mine have never leaked - but then the longest trip they've done in the rain is probably only 30-40 mins and I had waterproof trousers over the top of them

Ive had sidi's for over a year now.
Very comfy, excellent protection considering they are not a full on race boot and waterproof (I ride all year round, everyday).
They are very tight at first but do expand after use so dont buy anything that is a loose fit.
They can pong a bit in the summer but I'm considering buying some summer boots as well.
For the price I reckon they are bloody good value and should last a good few years.

Top boots.
Use em for commuting in all but summer months and they are waterproof, comfy and seem well made. Now ive said that they will spring a leak eh?

I think that Sidi must have updated their Black Rain boots and called them the EVO after the problems that they had with the original Balck Rains.

A mate was wearing some black rains on a trackday last year and came off at fairly low speed, he broke a rib which was painfull but most of his problems were caused by the excruciating pain his feet were left in for weeks afterwards. I would look elsewhere for that reason alone.
If you want a good pair of comfortable, durable and completely waterproof boots, avoid all the "fashion" brands completely and look to a specialist UK manufacturer - Altberg is your best option by far. For the same money you get a hand made custom sized boot that will last years and years. There's a good reason the police and forces use them, couriers too!

Really helpful comments there folks . Food for thought.
Particularly nice to see vegan boots on the Altberg site. Glad they've found a good use for vegans after all this time...only available in puce/pastey colour no doubt!!!
Oh, I'm sorry. (Bound to have upset somebody with that last comment . I just can't help myself sometimes.)
Not gone off the idea of Sidis but will definitely look at the others before making a final choice.

I recently decided to buy some new boots too. I was looking at Puma but was persuaded to look at Daytona Evo. I did and they are outstanding. Expensive but just fantastic. Daytona do a wide range and I'm sure they'll do a boot that will meet your needs. But at a price!!!

used black rain evo's for the past 5 years and are still in good nick,a good general purpose boot although as David Hicks says not as protective as a full on race boot!

I'll second that.....Daytona Evo Sports GTX. Excellent boot, mega waterproof (and well tested last year), great protection, all parts have replacements available, including the soles.....but not cheap!
