Bike lessons?

Well done all you who have passed your test. At the moment I have passes my cbt and ride a 125. Can anyone tell me please, do I now have to put in for my test...or do I have to have lessons before? I tried to find out on the net but can't seem to find what I want, I'll have to phone DVLA tomorrow I think to find out. Can anyone advise?

I would like to take my test on my 125 as i am used to it, but what will I be able to ride after I pass...I hope.

Happy riding all!

It's up to you N and C. you can put in for your test yourself, and take it on the 125. or you can have lessons and still take it on the 125.

I would suggest you have at least a few lessons at least.
the easiest way is to find a good local bike school and get them to asess you. they will tell you how many lessons they think you need and can arrange your test for you (once you have passed your bike theory test).
Once you pass on a 125 you can ride virtually any bike as long as it is restricted for the first 2 years.

Take your test soon - things change this autumn and it won't be as easy.

Hi, Just found this

DSA - The new practical motorcycle test is coming

Direct and Accelerated Access

Riders age 21 or over, or those who reach 21 before their 2-year restriction ends, have other options.

Direct Access:
After taking C.B.T. and the Theory Test the practical test may be taken on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kw. A pass allows you to ride any size of bike. All or part of the C.B.T. course may be taken on either a learner bike or a large bike. You may practise for the practical test on bikes larger than the learner bike specification provided: You are accompanied at all times by an approved instructor on another bike and in radio contact. You wear fluorescent or reflective clothing and follow all other provisional licence restrictions.

Accelerated Access:
Riders who reach the age of 21, while still within the 2-year period where they are restricted to maximum 25kw machines, but who wish to ride larger bikes need to pass a further test on a motorcycle of at least 35kw. They may practise on bikes over 25kw under the same practise conditions for Direct Access riders. You will revert to learner status while practising (on a motorcycle greater than 25kw) although test failure will not affect your existing licence.

Which option suits you best? Depends on your age of course.

Good luck anyway!!

i am having lessons and doing DAS my instructor
recommended when to put in for my test im doing it
on a 500.

cbt only last 2 years and i think you need that to ride a 125
to go to anything bigger you have to take a bike test
usually on a 500

try there...

Afraid thats not quite right...if you take your full test on a 125, I think you'll find you are limited to riding a bike of under 35Kw...you have to take your test on a bike that has at least that power in order to ride a bigger bike.
If you take your test on a 35kw bike and are under 21, you are still restricted for 2 years to a bike of that power. If you are over 21 then you can ride any bike.

I'd certainly recommend taking at least a few lessons, if for no other reason than they will show you the local test "routes" , which will certainly help to reduce test nerves.

Sorry - I did say you could ride any bike as long as it is restricted for 2 years . I believe (Chris and )Nean is over the age of 21 so if she takes her test on a 125 she will be able to ride any bike after 2 years ( although I believe there are a few rules about the size of the 125 you take your test on.

I suppose it depends on

1) How old you are
2) what sort of 125 you ride
3) what bike you want to ride afterwards and can it easily be restricted

Assuming you are over 21, and ride a 125 that is capable of exceeding 100kph/62.1mph you will be able to take your test on that and ride a bike restricted to 33(?) bhp for 2 years and then ride any bike.
If you are under 21 things are a bit different.

The easiest way is to speak to your bike school and get their advice.
