I dont know how I manage to keep smiling, but I try. I went down on Friday evening with the express idea of getting the tent up on Saturday morning, doing anything to the bike in the morning, then chilling out on Saturday afternoon rather than have the usual spannering session before my own races. I had discovered at Assen that the fuel pump connection under the tank had been faulty, causing the misfire I had there. So I had had a new race loom made and specifically pointed out the faulty connector. It was taken apart, found to be fine, and used in the loom build. Anyway, ran the bike for HOURS on saturday with no problems. Bugger me though, if I didnt go out for qualifying on Sunday morning, did one lap and she ground to a halt at Druids. No grid place for me then......and as there were 3 reserves, I then had to take the place of 4th reserve...so wasnt likely to get in. Went back to the tent SEETHING about the bike.....anyway, good old Douglas put on his surgical gloves and we delved INTO the tank, as we couldnt find ANYTHING wrong anywhere outside it.......and there it was....a loose connection ON the pump itself, plus a split in the hose.....so even when the pump was running, most of the fuel was just leaking BACK into the tank. Thanks to Al Knight for the bit of pipe, Imola Duke for the tiny Jubilee Clips, and Douglas' healing hands, and all was put back together and fired up instantly.
Being unlikely to get out in the DD races, I was offered a place on the 125/CB500 grid....and I reckoned that at least I'd get to test the repairs. Conditions were atrocious to say the least, but the bike, for the FIRST time this year, didnt miss a beat. I ran 3 laps and pulled in......then I went to the race office and told them I'd take the chance of getting into our DD races and would sit out the 125/CB500 grid.....and lo and behold, got started from the back of the grid....number 41.....

Anyway, got going, and again, the bike ran well, and I was picking off a few, and ended up having a good dice with Imola Duke, TP, and Ghost....then it was red flagged because of the atrocious conditions......I finished 16th, so not good, but at least the bike ran smoothly. Did the same in Race 2...only this time we had a dry track.....again, had to start from 41st and dead last, but soon got up with Phil and Ollie, then got past, and ended 8.5 seconds clear of Phil, who was a way in front of Ollie.....still only finished 15th, but again, the bike ran impeccably......and had I been able to qualify, I'd have done better. Now I can see she's running properly, I know I have to lean off the mixture now....and that should yield a bit more oomph......so we'll see at Donington. A big thanks to all those that turned up to watch us idiots.....its a pity poor old Matt Trayner HAD to lodge a complaint re the allegedly dangerous riding of another individual who was recently involved in another incident at a certain Welsh circuit...Nick B also had cause to complain about the same individual....it's a pity that any one person feels they can be permitted to forget the safety of others to gratify their needs and wants, but sadly Matt's protest was not upheld......I'm sure the next one will be.......and that wont be far off methinks. Anyway, for me, a mixed weekend.......glad to have seemingly sorted the probs that have beset the bike since the start of the year, and disappointed at not qualifying and having to start from the back of the grid..........
