Erm, I think it was Ollie's first attempt at welding. His last one, too, we hope...

Paivi, I'm hurt.
Hurt and saddened.
Hurt and saddened and shocked that you'd think I could have done that.
First, because if I could weld that well, I'd make sure the flippin world knew about it.
And second because I thought you knew that they won't let me play with the hot things. (Nor the sharp things either, for the matter of that)
Duke of Wales
I think we have paid dearly for the welding, given the mickeytaking it has brought down upon us.
The next part of the strategic plan to get the bike and the team into shape for the season to come is about to take off. It involves giving up atheism, and draws heavily upon the power of prayer, but needs must.

Ha! I think you will find this is modern METRIC powder coating of only 6.5mm thickness or less.
But thanks for the offer...we'll bear it in mind!

Just out of interest, did you ever get as far as checking the engine spec? Is it definately standard 583 spec or not???

Must add to this.....
Have you seen some of the very poor welding on the trellis frames ?
On both my DD bike and 900ss the welds in places are **** poor......
I can weld ... Tig Mig in Ally, SS, steel, titanium... pig to work with !
For 18 years if a little rusty now .................. i had enough spending my life behind a welding mask/helmet.
hence now a service engineer.
I agree with the safety in mind comments...... Pity the Ducati QC in the 90's didn't see this as a factor.
Hence lot's of welds cracking around headstocks.... I check mine often on the 900ss as this model is a suspect !!
Sorry if a little off topic Steve , Ollie.

Exactly, this has been a sore point with me for years, the frame is on show and some of the welds are appauling. If I keep mine long enough for a makeover, I shall clean up the original welds and go over them with T.I.G to make them an easthetic feature.
Phil

Not a problem, Steve...all interesting stuff.
And for everyone with special welding skill who has commented about the safety aspects of both the original welds and the replacement brackets, I'd just like to say
Your concern for the welfare of others does you credit.Rest assured it will be checked to be as structurally sound as need be.

Have you seen some of the welding on the 1098? At least the very first ones looked like they'd been welded by drunk apprentices on their first ever day at work!

Zimbo, the engine is now on the bench and we plan to begin stripdown to check it for bore and stroke within the next week. Our engine Guru has inconsiderately gone on vacation, however, which presents us with a challenge...or maybe just a little delay.

I think they used a candle and a length of fuse wire.
