Right back to my welding here, i know its not the best but i had half an hour to get the brackets made up and then on to the bike ready to get it dropped off at the powder coaters, its not a critical part, just a fairing bracket, so was not bothered trying to set the welder up fully for the job, it was a pig to weld, it would not take to the frame one bit, there is something in those frames it just didnt like, also i was about out of gas, i just got a good layer on to hold it, that was fine, then added a 2nd layer so that i could tidy it up,
As you say all start somewhere, if i had the time i would have actually brazed it with my Oxy set, i just didnt have the time tho..
If i need more welding doing GHOST i will take you up on your offer, but i would prefer to learn with the guidance of yourself if that was not a problem, as then i feel i benifit more and aslo learn what needs to be done etc.. i love this kind of work and making things, just something i have always done..
And Nigel cheers for the comments, think we will be speaking alot during this year, would be good to catch up with you at some of the races too if your about..
Oh and last note, i think that it looks rather neat after the poeder is on it!! ha ha ha

Which leads me, rather nicely I feel, to the subject under discussion...
OK, so the forks having been removed it looks like we may need to replace them because of pitting and wear, or to have them rechromed... I note that second hand ones on fleabay are on offer for an asking price of about 200 plus postage.... Does that seem reasonable? Does anyone know offhand what we might expect to pay for rechroming? (Phil I will call the company you suggested tomorrow...just looking for a ballpark figure)

£200 seems most unreasonable to me. I'd say the going rate for Marzocchis is under £100 a pair, Showas about £150. Ask on the DSC Desmodue forum, someone will have a pair of Marzocchis in their shed they'll sort you ouut a good price on.
Seriously though, I'd concentrate on making sure the engine is legal as a mater of extreme urgency, far more important than forks or fairing brackets. It's only about 15 weeks to season opener and you'll want a couple of trackdays first, so you've got twelve weeks. forks can be sorted quickly, the engine is potentially a big problem if it's not legal and it may not be possible to rectify it, if that's the case all your work is for nothing. Seriously, run a 583 with 60bhp and I absolutely guarantee it'll be protested, which means you have to strip it down there and then, in front of the club officials, to prove it's legal. If the protest is upheld you're out and won't be welcomed back. The front runners in DD, even in class B, take it very, very seriously, it's not a game to them.

I agree with Zimbo on the fork front, there will be some available for £75-100 on DSC, I've seen several....and a pair of Showas on fleabay went for £14.99 the other day...ok, one lower slider was slightly bent but you can get new ones easily enough.........£200 is FAR too much.....

Thanks for the advice about prices,Graeme. Thanks also for the advice about the engine.
We take the rules seriously too, and if the engine aint legal, it aint going racing. Same goes for the rest of the bike. (Hope that did not sound too plonky)
As I say we should know more, probably tomorrowm but for sure later this week. The jury is still out but at the moment my money is on an optimistic dyno. Maybe that is just wishful thinking, though.
