Ducati 1000SS - Rear/Front Sprocket Change?

Hi guys, going up one tooth on my supersport at the back - 38 to 39 per recommendation from my dealer - what's the real effect on performance? Anyone know the general rule?

thanks
Willie

going up 2 on the rear is equivelant to going down 1 on the Front, It will give the bike better acceleration, but will loose slight Top end Performance!

thanks Ollie, sounds like a good mod then - 1st geat on my 1000SS is too long anyway, thru town - if stopping and starting, it's 1st all the way normally, not too great! Trade off for top speed is acceptable i think, rarely holding it open in top for long anyway, better to get some extra kick in the 'real' zone?
What do you think?

regards
Willie

Sprockets

On my 999 2003 I have gone to 1 down on the front and three up on the rear. This gearing is almost the same as my RX Kawasaki, not quite but almost there.
Has anybody else done major re-gearing like this on their bike's? I find the acceleration is fantastic and response is out of this world. 8) 8)

Going up 1 or even 2 on the rear is a good mod to do, I went down one on the front (equivelant to up almost 3 on the back) and it made the bike easier to ride at low speeds without any noticable drop in performance at the top end (900SSie). My 900 monster I've gone up 2 on the rear, made it much better all round.

Same here guys, went up 2 on the back sprocket and noticed a difference in low speed control as well as better acceleration.

To alter the gearing its generally accepted you go up on the back rather than down on the front. This puts less stress on the moving parts.

The only downside to going up at the rear is to get the std chain to fit you shorten the wheel base...which can have an adverse effect on your handling.
( look at the 916-999-1098 progression..the wheel base has got longer model to model)

So if and indeed i have gone up on the rear sprocket i fitted a new chain as well, taking the opportunity to fit a gold one! and keep my wheel base long.

On my Aprilia Factory, I went DOWN a tooth on the front. I gained acceleration, lost a bit of economy, and lost 8mph off the top speed ( tested thru Bruntingthorpe GPS trap ) from 178mph to 170 ( with a slight tail wind ! )

I have gone up 4 teeth on the rear of my twinspark project-don't know what it's like yet as I haven't got it back from JHP. It is now geared for 130 at max power and 143 at max revs-should easily do both with the engine spec I have................

I'm running 15/43 gearing, which is pretty well ideal for the type of roads around here.

I have my Duke at 14 ( down 1 ) at the front and up to 39 at the rear ( up 3 ). Anybody got there verdict on this set up? Asit says in this post the gearing is very low when setting of. I have read this before that they are vastly over geared. My set up is not as high as the Jap bikes but not far away. If I wanted to get the same gearing I think I would have to go up to a 41 on the.

Anybody got any advice on this. Good. Bad etc. I have had it like this for ages and it goes like a sh*t of a shovel. To be honest dropping it at the front is not that a good idea to me as there is very little room at all to drop it. It can chew up the swing arm protector.
