UPDATE:

I took a trip to the local bike shop this afternoon (not the one i purchased it from). As soon as i pulled up, the mechanic came out and said 'that doesn't sound to good mate'! After a brief chat, we concluded it must be the small end bearing at fault. He estimated a days labour alone just to strip the bike down to diagnose the fault for definate. I've never been one to fork out money unless absolutely necessary, so off home i went while planning the next few hours in my head. That basically involved stripping the bike myself and that is what i have managed to do! I've never worked on big bikes before exept as a trainie at BMW. I managed to remove the vertical head without totally removing the engine which, to me, seemed quite an acheivement! I'm now at a stage where i need some help from you guys again! :-)

Could anyone tell me how the barrel is removed? i cant seem to see how it is fixed to the rest of the engine!

Also, nogaromill, can you supply the necessary parts for reassembly? gaskets, small end bearing? Oh, and concerning the price you sell the barnett clutches for; i take it thats just for the plates?

If the head is off the barrel will come off its prob just adhered to the base gasket.

As you are that far in do the horiz cyl also and get all your valve clearances set up with the head on the bench.

Thats the plan matey.

Had the barrel off just now and cant feel any play in the bearings whatsoever! only sideways play.

The only other thing that could cause the tapping could be the valves i guess.

I measured the clearances and these are as follows:

Exhaust: Top rocker: 0.06mm 0.0027
Bottom rocker: 0.28mm 0.011

Inlet: Top rocker: 0.13mm 0.005
Bottom rocker: 0.18mm 0.007

Do they sound like they would be causing the loud tapping noise? what are the recommended clearances?

according to haynes :
inlet opening 0.05 to 0.12mm
inlet closing 0.03 to 0.20mm
exhaust opening 0.05 to 0.15mm
exhaust closing 0.03 to 0.20mm
hope this helps ;-)

cool, cheers dude. there seems to be quite a difference between the upper and lower limits on those clearances! It looks as if my exhaust closing clearance is a fair way out!

Any ideas on where i can get the shims i require?

I notice this thread is quite old, so not sure how far through you are with this job but a comment on the clutch slip.

This is a common problem with the wet clutch SS'. As stated some people have found things to be better running semi synthetic, but a full synth motorcycle oil should still be ok for use with a wet clutch.

I picked up a tip from some of the DDers and endorsed by Neil at Cornerspeed. An extra drive plate at the base of the pack increases the spring preload. I did this on my wet clutch 750ss when I replaced my friction plates, no more slip issues. It seems that the standard clutch is pretty marginal, even with new plates and springs.

dont know if youve sorted the oil/moisture issue? had this problem with mine for a while. cured it by removing the crankcase breather pipe and fitting a k&n breather. rode about 70 or 80 miles and it cleared itself.
hope this helps.
