D.I.Y. race can
I like every one else with a motorbike doesnt want it to sound like an electric blender, I couldnt afford a termi or similar sort of pipe ( be worth more than my bike), I know you can buy a viper can and a link pipe but the link pipe fixings make it look a bit rough, besides which that still would cost £150, The easiest simplest and cheapest way was to buy a decent race can that came off a jap bike and modify it to fit, Because of the sheer amount of them around picking up a cheap second hand can is easier, The cheapest I have seen a can go for a 600ss is £85 second hand, I bought a second hand carbon micron can for £30,
To make it fit all I did was to carefully hack saw the part i needed off the standard can and drill holes in to suit, The point being that you can pick up a standard can cheaper than you can buy a link pipe, It now has that proper sound to it but isnt over loud, Could be an easy fix as well if some one has a small misadventure and damages there exhausts,
Literally took me an hour or so with a hacksaw, drill and a file,

I don't want to sound like a killjoy but surely if you use a can that wasn't designed for your bike it's going to create fuelling problems.

Not so sure Multi, IMHO this whole can thing is the biggest bluff ever, we're talking concentric pieces of pipe with fibreglass packed between em?? There's plenty of blokes in sheds knocking them out with fancy ad's in mags, and end of the day, they're nothing fancy! Maybe different story with the headers on a highly tuned engine, but cans are a bit of a myth - again, IMHO!!!

Nice job wrs71!
I took another route on my 1st 851, I striped the cans hacksawed the internals off, then welded 50mm stainless perf' tube to what was left, repacked the cans with top quality packing and for good measure had the alloy sleaves re-anodised....Cost was around £65 for the pair and they still had all the original numbers on them for the MOT  .
Fitted a JHP chip and the job was a good un!

This topic was covered ages ago. I posted my experiences, which amount to stripping literally hundreds of cans, and in 98% of cases they are pretty much the same for road bikes. Akrapovic were the ONLY ones that had things like tapered baffle tubes.......

His job wasn't as neat as mine and useing the 50mm perf' tube left mine the same internally as a pair of Termis'.
As one of the other lads wrote it's the headers that make the biggest difference and they're a lot harder to make.

The noise isnt over loud as the link pipe has a perf tube inside the part where it tapers out, this will deaden the sound slightly, I dont think the tail can is any where near as critical on a four stroke compared to a two stroke, Thats why so many cans are interchangable, I know this as i used to make expansion chambers all the time and even the the length and diameter of the stinger is critical,( as is the entire system ,even chroming it can alter the power curve) I did shorten my can down to the standard length as well ( from 490mm to 400mm) , This was for looks as much as any thing else, It certainly feels more responsive off the throttle, cant test properly till i fix the front brake, ( a tad important)
