What to look for when buying 749?
Hi Guys
So I have been exploring my options and unless I can come up with extra £2500 I am not able to get 996. Stupid insurance . I like the 749 as much as 996 and insurance is so much lower (800 for full comp and 996 is 2500 F&T).
- What should one look out for when buying 749s or 749? I am aiming at 2004 model as I was told by some people (including here) that 03 rear swing-arm is a no go.
- What are the service intervals, in manual it gives 5k,10k,15k and so on but motorapido for example is 6k,12k,18k ....?
- What is a good price for 749/749s form that year. I am looking for something around 5000 miles (6000 if that is the time for small service) or around big service mileage.
- What are the prices for bought services so I know and can adjust price accordingly when buying (if service is not done you can always use it against seller it is a war at the end ).
Please do not start the best colour debate. I know the colour I want ....

Swing arm is ok which ever one no one has put anything forward to say that the cast one is weak or flexible.
You will not exploit the 749's potential either. There is loads on here about them so its down to you to look but find a good one and you won't be dissapointed.

Swing-arm check I can get 03 which sounds better. What do you mean by exploit the potential of 749?

Its as quick as you will be able to handle, you won't get the most/best out of it on the road. So your first track day maybe coming sooner.
Good luck with your quest.

Got one more question: A lot of ducatis are low mileage. Lets say I get an 03 with 6k service done is the 12k a must? How does it work, I got my monster with out 12k service stamp as each time bike was with dealer they only did 6k one. 12k was not required except belts and setting up all clearings. Even when I got it for quick check up they only did 6k service as last one was done 1 year earlier by previous owner.
Hell that is not a question.
Perfect example 3700 miles:

Yes no steering damper, limited adjustment on front suspension, no rear ride adjustment, solid link.
There the ones that know of others may no more.
Belts replaced every 12k or 2years which ever sooner.

Std 749 as mine is has all that, it doesn't have Ti fork sliders but mine does. The solid link is a non adjustable link.

Ok What is Ti fork sliders? Sorry do not know a thing about 749 except it has wheels and an engine and a frame + some plastic It looks cool and rides the bomb.
Do you know any one on this site that would be able to answer to my service question?

Ti is the titanium nitride coating that has the gold colour on the sliders. Less friction and more durable to corrosion and stone impact.
Valve clearance check and adjust at 12k with belt replacement also.
It will be difficult to determine if clearances have been checked, they may say that they have, but its a big job, so!!!!!....
But the 749 is a cracking bike. Or the S

Ti fork sliders = Titanium Nitride coated/plated fork sliders, nice blingy gold colour instead of chrome. also gives a smoother sliding action or less "stiction"

The best bet for me then is to get a bike which has had the 12k service done recently. They might included it in the price if bought dealer.
That Ti fork can be a future upgrade or if I get a 749s might not.
