I'm sorry ducbird but I've seen plenty of Knobs riding Ducati's!
Wheelies don't impress me...
Well there's been the odd occasion when they have.
Once when riding my old bevel at speeds well in excess of 100mph in the middle lane of a motorway a Gixxer 1000 rider pulled alongside of me, gave me the thumbs up and hoisted the biggest wheely I've ever seen passing 3 cars, before disappearing into the distance, I got my head down a caught him up only for him to pull the same trick...
I know he was being a hooligan but it impressed me...
I would never have the bottle to hoist the front wheel at those sort of speeds.

I am a nob then and I have a Ducati so Stevemuzicman, so here is a first sighting.
If I will crash I will crash but it will not be in to a car or someone as I am not going to attempt learning on public road, a big car park is the place.
Wheelie is a right of passage, whenever there were motorcycles there were wheelies.

Now from a proper point of view.
Wheelie = balance (that is needed for day to day riding)
Wheelie = throttle precise control (that is needed as well)
Wheelie = precise break control (that is needed)

So then again where is it wrong because some of you think so?

BTW

Stoner is a nob, Rossi is a nob, Pedrosa, Lorenzo, Melandri and many more are all nobs.
Not mentioning many people on this site …

Regarding wheelie schools, a good idea for people who like going to school to learn I was always do it yourself person. At the end instructors at such schools had to learn somewhere and any of them that took similar school had instructors of their own. They had to learn somewhere as well and they probably did it my way.

Why because I am do it your self type of person? Mind you was on a air traffic controler course (did not want to let my try and learn my self). Quit after couple of days as it was to hard and not for me.

Jesus - what's with all the nob comments?

Only nobs do wheelies and nobs don't buy Ducatis? Do you realise how sanctimonious and elitist that makes you sound?

Pathetic. Whatever happened to freedom of choice?

I don't go round wheelieing but I certainly don't condemn people who do!

Yup.

Why did you buy a Duc? I bought 1 as IMO they are superior to most other bikes, which I guess confirms my elitist views. I also think the poor should be put down, such a drain on the community.....................and before I get slaughtered, that's a joke.

I stand by my first comment though people who do wheelies on the road are n**s no matter what bike they ride.............................the Duc mention was give with the left take with the right.

All I am really worrid about is Luca smashing up his yellow bike, there is not many out there.............you should have learnt on your monster though, it would be a far cheaper off.

Erm, what about endos then? Did my first yesterday approaching the car park at work: there's a corner I always enjoy, followed by a bit of sharp braking. After having my suspension fettled, the back popped straight up into the air when I braked, it felt huge!
I managed fine but felt like a bit of a nob as there were witnesses, had they seen my eyes they'd have known it wasn't deliberate.

Most area's of riding increase the risk of accidents, wether it be wheelies, stoppies, sliding the rear out on your super moto, speeding, filtering between traffic etc. All of it is unecissary but is part of the essence of owning a bike.

i think the problem arises when you start doing these things to show off instead of for your own pleasure, i bet the statistics show that a majority of accidents involving these situations occure when people are riding to impress

for fear of sounding like i pick and choose here
Rossi pulling a wheelie on track after finishing a race
is for me in a controlled environment sort of way..on a race
track with experience behind him and relative safety

Reading Lucas thread makes me feel as if the only reason he
has changed his gearing is to be able to pull wheelies otherwise
what is the point...
Yes he has said hes gonna learn in a car park .. but how long will
it be before the temptation or the accidental pulling of one is on
a road with crap surfaces etc etc.....

Wheelies dont impress me out on the roads and my reaction to this
would be ( cant print it on here ) but as said its freedom of choice

(Ducbird justifying her nob outburst.. )

Steve, smaller monster not to keen on wheelies but I did try just not managed. Got scared after one landing when I bottomed the forks and as no steering damper front got wobbly :P Bigger monster would be much easier I assume (I did a short one on S4R). It looks for me like 749 is as good as any other bike to learn. Enough power but not enough to do power wheelie by accident like I did on S4R(except 1st gear). That is part of reason I want to learn on some bigger bikes (even 1098) wheelie can happen by accident. To minimize danger to others/my bike it will be on a car park and I am fitting this weekend fork and swing arm protectors and will need to get and fit frame sliders but need to find a good way first (not fancy hole in faring). Maybe I will get a track day set to play about.
