Ducati 750GT - Buying Advice Needed!

Got the chance to buy an elderly 750 GT air cooled. Not sure of the age but its in reasonably good condition. Black and red. Any thoughts on this particular bike and its faults/assets. Or do I walk away. Chap wants about 2 grand for it. Cheers.

I had an 860 back in the 70's. It cost me a bundle and put me off Dukes for the best part of 20 years. If you are a nut and bolt rebuild enthusiast may be it's your cup of tea, but bits will come loose and eventually drop off if you don't keep an eye on them.

Hi,2 grand sounds reasonable depending on condition,Ducati's from this era ie.early seventies are renowned for being fragile (especially the V's) before you buy i would advise you to take someone along who knows about them, could be a good investment if its a gud'un...however if it aint ,then you could end up spending a lot more than what you paid for it....tread wearily.

Hi,
The GT750 was a soft tuned round case bevel Ducati, that should be capable of high milage!
However it's now very old and may now need a lot of money spent on it!
Think £5,000+ for a concours rebuild...It could be a big '+s' as well.
The motor alone could eat that sort of cash.
If you have the time and the money?
Break his arm off, if you sit on it for long enough you'll make money.
However i think these bikes should be used.
If you decide not to buy it? I'm interested in it!...
Not as an investment but to restore and enjoy. I love these old Ducati's.

Steve

Hi Steve and thanks to the others for their comments. Apparently the motor does have a rattle/knock that the owner puts down to a bit of piston slap on 1 cyl. I have yet to hear the motor running to make up my own mind. If its not my cup of tea, I will send you and email Steve. Cheers.

Hi Vee twin,
My Dad used to have a 1974 750GT! He loved it but had to sell it due to ME being born! He wishes he still had it of course. I know this because I´m constantly reminded!
I wish he still had the GT to. Would make for great weekend swaps (although not in Malaga!)
If I had the readies and the time, I´d buy one!

Richie.

I had a 78 Darmah, which was also a bevel twin....and it spent 90% of its time in bits on the garage floor. I loved it but what a pain if you had regular mileage to do then.....I sold it and bought a CB750K2......

Bet you wish you hadn't!

They weren't unreliable if you looked after them... I had an 82 MHR from new as my only transport. It NEVER let me down in 44000 km, except for one electrical wire failure that was my own fault.

It remains to be seen if the same bike will be as reliable after I've finished rebuilding it.

That 750 was a bargain. Any more going at that price, please let me know!!!
