Bike: 800 Sport

Rode brit bikes for 20+ years. Wanted a Duke, but was aware it was the first time I'd be riding something with some real grunt. Wouldn't have comtemplated an 848. Nuff said!

(12 months now on an 800 and I'd contemplate an 848, although I have to say I'm hoping my brother is going to get fed up of his 748 and send it to me in the post next week. (I am delusional by the way - don't take my word for it, ask anybody on here.))

FWIW,

A mate of mine passed DAS and bought a 2nd hand CBR600F. After 6 months, he was cheesed off and bought a new CBR1000RR (Repsol). No problems, no accidents, nada.

If you have spent your life driving a car like a numpty, you will drive the bike likewise and something will happen. Awareness & common sense are priceless (and rare) commodities.

Have a read of something like "twist of the wrist 2" to understand the physics and just go practice...

Bike: ducati 600ss in red

hello there and welcome to this great forum
and community...

I wanted an 848 even sat on one in dealers and fell in love...
hadnt even started riding or passed my test..but i really really
wanted one..

Then i found my 600SS then passed my DAS rode her and my
its not an easy bike to ride but then my experience of bikes is
very limited..
I had to unlearn all i was taught and relearn...Going round long bends
and twisties isnt easy rear wheel locking up isnt funny I had some
scary moments but i think my driving experience helped avoid any incidents

Im glad now i didnt go for the 848 as i think the power would have been far
too much for me to learn on and i dont care who you are the temptation to
twist that throttle faster is there and very great..

The SS is unforgiving but has a sting in the tail and riding her isnt boring
infact it leaves you wanting more...
The 848 probably would have put me off riding for life...

My experience would say to start small build up your riding skills and then
invest in a bigger engine as your skills increase..
And binning the 848 would just be unbearable ....

Just my opinion

........now thats some of the opinion i share......i don't want to be bored in 2 months because the bike is no fun or not challenging & then wish i had of bought the 848 in the beginning. And i agree on the 'attitude' of how I approach my car driving has a bearing on the attitude i will bring to bikes.

However, having had another day of direct access today, i think i am going to look at a Monster 696 and talk to the Dealer about having an 848 next Spring, so he better not stitch me come p/x time.

Thanks all for your views and for your welcoming.

The 696 is an excellent bike, so much better than you'd think it was just from looking at it Definitely a more sensible route to go down.

Then buy an older Monster and you'll lose nothing....buy a new one and boy, will you lose ! Same as with any new bike.

Bike: 2008 Monster 695

Having just got back into riding myself the first thing I'd say is trust your instincts.

I had loads of advice from friends about which bike, none of which turned out to be right for me. Also listening to how I am feeling I have found has a huge impact on how I ride.

I found a dealer with demo bikes to take a few out for a run. I went expecting to get a bandit (as advised by friends) and didn't eaven go out on it!

I bought a monster and have been loving it since. I feel comfortable on it, am not intimidated by it, its a great size and weight for me (admitedly I'm 5 4 and about 9 stone!).

Will definitely work up to something faster in a couple of years but in the mean time I'm having great fun and learning to ride, properly!

So listen to your instincts... Good luck and have fun!

Definately a ditto from me. A previously loved Monster is a sound purchase. There are many variants on the market and loads of goodies to boot.

Welcome to the clan!!

Nope, the lessons learned on the monster are directly transferrable. In fact it happens without conscious thought.

The monster is a superbike really, just without the fairing. The original monster used the frame and swinging arm of the 888 WSB winning superbike, and monster handling is definately in superbike league. The lessons you need to learn apply to pretty much all bikes, monsters and superbikes included, you can learn them on a monster and directly transfer them.
If you don't want a monster another option is an SS, you can buy one cheap (£1500 - £2K) have a lot of fun and gain some very valuable experience, then sell it on for pretty much what you paid for it and get the 848. You get the benefit of a fully faired sweet handling bike with a very forgiving nature and more than enough power without being in the super risky league. I reckon I could ride a 900SSie from A - B or round a track every bit as fast as I could an 848, and a 900 monster very nearly as fast.

I had to wait two weeks for my 848. No idea about the Monster, but I'd imagine similar as they should be in stock by now.
