Unhappy Deceased clutch

Decided to check and clean my clutch this evening , basically I wanted to check the state of the basket before buying a new clutch pack . I re installed the plates making sure that they all went back in the same order and just reversing the friction plates so that the wear on the tabs was on the over run side ,Then replaced the clutch cover and turned the engine over with the kill switch in the off position to check that everything cleared , All seemed fine so I started the engine and pulled the clutch lever in to check that everything worked and it went bang and stalled , On removing everything I have two broken posts , unfortunately side by side .

On inspecting the damage to find out where I had screwed up I found the culprit , At some time in the bikes past a post had been broken off and had been replaced using a bolt through the rear of the clutch drum It would seem that either whilst removing or replacing the spring on that post I must have either loosened or over tightened the broken post and when I pulled the clutch in with the engine running it hit the cover and demolished the post next to it

Bad luck - on the plus side at least you weren't doing 80mph when it let go -it could have been worse.....

I totally shagged a clutch at the IOM TT on my 851 about 12 years ago . On returning home I phoned Moto cinelli who were at that time one of a few importers of the bikes . I fitted as set of plates and springs for an 888 sp2 , which cost around the same and was a lot stronger . No other mods were required .

Hi Screwy,
If your really strapped for cash I'm sure that I've got a few 2nd hand parts floating around in my workshop to help you out.

Thanks for the offer Steve it's appreciated
Not so much strapped for cash as peeved that I broke it in all honesty , 20/20 hindsight says I should have tried the clutch lever when I was turning the bike over on the starter motor but I didn't

On the plus side the basket whilst grooved still has plenty of wear left and I was getting new plates anyway as there was nearly 3mm of play between the tangs and the basket though the clutch did work fine . Ducati Leeds unfortunately didn't have a clutch drum in stock so have had to order one , but £62.98 seemed a pretty fair price to me

Wow that's some play, I thought mine was bad with 1.5mm - looks like theres some life left in it yet.
