Almost there

well here are a few pics of the cooling duct..from NASCAR to Ducati.... I am once again in bucharest so the duct is at home curing for the week.... measure twice cut once...mmmm fecked up the measurement of the outlets but had offcuts of CF so slapped em on with a bit of resin... very tricky stuff..worse than fibreglass matting if you ask me..shreds all over the place...stuck my rubber gloves to it...abandoned them and then ended up with fluffy black fingers!!

It will work but its a good job it isnt visible as the finish wont be top class thats for sure

Looks like a good work in progress that george

Why don't you try using 2" masking tape stuck to the outer face of the raw carbon matting before cutting it and it holds it all together, then apply the resin to the the edges of the joint your covering, lay the carbon onto that and then apply more resin. The tape stops it coming apart and going all over the shop ! after it's hardened just peel off the masking tape. It will cut or sand nicely after that , you can apply some more resin on the unmasked area and again after its gone off sand it smooth with wet/dry.

Actually mate I have taken on board what you say, as I want to make a couple of pieces up from scratch, pieces which will be visible, so it will be important to get the weave all nice and uniform.

The air deflectors for the back of the MY97 fairings, which I bought from Imola Duke, for example, I asked a couple of carbon manufacturers but they werent really interested in small one off jobs. Also I want to make some blanks to fill in the fairing indicator holes, but these will be painted over so the weave alignment is not so important.

some more bits

Just a few bits knocked up whilst waiting for my engine to come back from the 'shop'

The air scoops need yet more work, I sanded them too much and some of the resin has lifted in a thin skin, obviously didnt do it properly.

The air fliter lid has had a couple of carburettor bellmouths added for more air induction, and I am in the process of knocking up an airbox/battery box from carbon.

The carburettor airbox was a right sod to glue together, but I am quite pleased with it, obviously needs finishing and a second one making too.... Lordy all this scratchbuilding takes me back to my youth and all the modelmaking I did, perhaps it wasnt wasted time!!

Thats a fine piece of fabrication fella I love the triangular box for the breather pipes, put me down for one of them...
If your fitting FCR's George you will only need one airbox unit, as I found out when fitting mine, why put it back on if it's not used !

Been doing a bit of carbon fibre work myself, I've altered a DP carbon SS hugger I had to fit the new light weight swing arm i've got on the SS/IE (you know the one George ) Haven't finished it yet but i'll post some pics when i've completed it, it's looking good.

PS. two more weeks and we're off to Italy I can't bloody wait...

Cheers for that info Ian, which airbox is needed though the one with the two holes on the face, or with the small pipe spigot on the bottom?

I have oredered...at considerable cost... a hugger for the 'banana' swing arm, sent photos to a UK supplier..who for the time being shall remain nameless...they assured me the hugger they can supply is like the one in the photos.....then they sent me a standard 900ss hugger!!

I used the outer one, as the pipe from the carbs fits onto the small tube 'spiggot' on it and it fits between the frame tubes nicely. There are two small screw hole in the back of it that allow air flow but no big holes like the one removed (if you get what I mean )

At the moment the hugger i'm using is a standard shape carbon one but i'm going to cut it right down as i think it needs to have less bulk !

Work in progress...

cheers mate......about the airbox.. as for the hugger that is mightily strange, I cant line up the upper screwholes on mine, because the curvature of the hugger butts against the upright on the swing, even if I could line them up, then the bottom screwholes dont line up either.

I've fabricated new top lugs , as you say, the standard holes don't line up. Use the bottom ones and just add some carbon sheet to make up new top ones, drill and cut to shape. You will need to cut down the back section that sits below the sub frame a bit, but after that it's a great fit. As I said it's not finished yet but it's coming along nicely

Holy Moly George, you're a busy bunny! I'm watching your nose fairing with interest as i too have a cunning plan for my bike: use the air scoop at the nose to help cool the rear cylinder... well... thats the plan...every time i walk past my vaccum cleaner i look at the "flexi hose" on it and say "i know where youre gona end up!"

Keep us posted
