unplug the side stand switch, cut the switch part of the unplugged bit off and join the wires together and replug the adapted plug back into the socket

it worked on my bike

the safety nazis will tell you that its dangerous and you could inadvertently ride around with the sidestand down - yes that is possible

Or you can buy a bypass lead from ebay for about £20 and that lets you warm it up on the stand, but cuts the engine if you drop it in to gear while the stand is down: Ducati Sidestand Bypass 748/996/998/ST2/ST4 on eBay, also Ducati, Motorcycle Parts, Motorcycle Parts Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 10-Jun-08 21:47:57 BST)

As one of the safety nazis there is no need to butcher the wiring by hacking of the plug and leave yourself vulnerable.

For a couple of quid, some thought and application you can have exactly what the manufacturer should have provided in the first place i.e. the bike will run on the stand but only in neutral, as soon as a gear is selected power to the ECU is cut.

See my very first thread to this forum DIY - Ducati Sidestand Modification

Any questions then pm me.

Each to their own, I have several bikes and apart from the ducati none of them had a sidestand cut off switch, to have one set up with a "safety" feature and the others not is possibly inviting trouble, ie lazy habits learnt with the ducait and its safety switch could prove disasterous when these habits are transferred to another bike with out this feature

I took the switch off my '96 SS when I got it, I like to let it warm up a bit on the side stand before I set off. I got the new IE out the other day and it has the cut off switch still on, it took a few minutes to realise thats why it wouldn't start what a pain...

I still start all bikes I ride with the clutch lever pulled in, even starting a car I drop the clutch, it's a habit I picked up when I worked in the motor trade, you never know if someone before you left it in gear or (in the case of early Ducati electrics) if the neutral light is correct.

I suppose it's down to personal preference, set it up the way you like it and you won't go far wrong.

In some ways I agree with you, insofar my other bike which I rode in my teens and twentys did not have such a device and you learnt to remember it. But if the bike is capable of providing the facility, but doesn't due to the manufacturer's warped logic then I see no reason not to use it. After all you have to alter it to stop it working so why not alter it to make it work correctly.

749 kills the engine when one selects a gear, I would think its just through the neutral switch. Anyway I like it as more than a few times I have filled up and selected gear and its stopped.

Which means if it did not have this facility, I would have moved off with the stand down.

Only has to happen once in a million times but it would ruin your day, thats for sure.

Like jumperboy mine just has the warning light switch, on my first 900ss this didnt work and one day I did ride off with the side stand down, got to the first lefthander and the world went a bit sideways for a while, luckily I wasnt going fast as I didnt have a helmet on at the time!!..sore left knee, sore wallet extremly dented pride.... my BMW 850 GS has a switch so you cant even start it with the sidestand down..although you can on the main stand....which is a bit of a pain as with full touratech side panniers and a tank bag on it weighs as much as HMS Ark Royal!!

Performed the operation this afternoon, only took 10 mins, and the patient is alive and well..my plug has 3 contacts, all i did was unplug the connector and connect the 2 outer contacts with a bent paper clip ,then wrapped it in insulating tape..job done.

I made a point of going to my local dealers (italia moto) and asking advice first ,just to be on the safe side, the senior mechanic there is a cracking bloke and he said that it shouldnt be a problem.
