Fuel Injection
I have a 98 900ss ef which I bought from new and have enjoyed all these years with only minor niggles, however all of a sudden it has started to misbehave. After approx 90 miles it cuts out with no warning. It will start ok but as soon as you hit 2,000 rpm it cuts out again, start no problem and again as soon as you hit 2,000 rpm it cuts out. If you leave for approx 20mins the problem has disappeared, however 20 mile further down the road it happens again. My thoughts are something to do with the fuel injection and or temperature Has any one had this happen to them and can anyone suggest how to cure it. When I phoned my local Ducati service department after hearing my tale he took a sharp intake of breath and said it could be very expensive. Can anyone help please?

Lol......I think mechanics spend a year learning that sharp intake of breath! I'd check the obvious things first.....blocked fuel filter, blocked tank breather, as it sounds like a fuel starvation problem.......I'd also check the inside of the tank for water and/or rust particles.......90miles is getting towards the bottom of the tank.....

Could be your ignition pickups... had this happen to me on a triumph... same symptoms and at first misdiagnosed as fuel starvation. Simple enough to check with a multimeter by checking their resistance. if memory serves me well they should be somewhere between 95-105 ohms (if i'm wrong someone put me right) anything else and they are naff. when they start "dying" they do give similar symptoms to fuel startvation. hope this helps

I had a similar issue with a tank on my 750ss ie. The tank was full of all sorts of crap caused by tank rust, paint flakes etc. Luckily I spotted it before it actually ground to a halt, as it was a miracle that the gauze filter let any petrol through!
It was pretty straightforward to clean it up, and I painted the inside with Petropatch, which I got for under a fiver from Halfords.

calculate the inner surface area of the tank, decide how many microns of paint coverage you want, block all the holes, pour the required amount of paint in, close the lid and shake like buggery.... either that or use child labour.. the victorians were right in some respects you know

No No No.. let me clarify... Either shake the tank like buggery, or use child labour.
The terms 'buggery' and 'child labour' should never, ever be used in the same sentence.
