Backfire through airbox

My 2000 900SSIE has developed a backfire through the air box. It occurs around 3,500 to 4,000 rpm usually at off or very light throttle. It does not happen often, but it is anoying. Valves were adjusted less than 1,000 miles ago and the bike runs great.

How can I correct this?

Back fire through the air box is usually caused by engine running lean.......

On very rare occasions and for no apparent reason I get exactly the same issue. I would not call it a backfire more a splutter. It always happens at between 3,000 and 3,500 revs and with the throttle just open. Apart from this and the normal cold running which is crap the bike runs soooo sweet. Gets regularly serviced and certainly does not run lean. Not sure why it happens but it appears not have affected the bike which has done 17K miles.

My ssie has the occasional burp. I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe happened 5 times in 6k miles.
