Ducati Air Box Mods for K&N Filter?

I might be missing the bleeding obvious here but is there a reason why on a lot of airbox mods the existing air box is cut away and then fitted with a new K&N filter (about £40 ?) when you could do away with an uncut airbox (which you could sell) and fit K&N filter pods for about £50? are the pods not as good?

Airbox

Well £40 and then £50 but what about this little piece of bling?

I think I have posted this before but is this BLING 8) 8) or is this BLING 8) 8)

It is a pity that you cannot see it when it is on.

Looks a bit like one of those torture devices from the 14th Century to me!

To awnser the original question:

"Older engines drew air directly from the surroundings into each individual carburetor. Modern engines instead draw air into an airbox, which is connected by individual hoses to each carburetor, or directly to the intake ports in fuel-injected engines.

An airbox allows the designers to exploit the properties of air to improve performance. For example, modern high-performance motorcycles have the airbox draw air from the front of the bike, so that air is forced in, rather than having to be sucked in."

Pod filters are far more difficult to accurately tune than an open airbox and offer no power advantage. Open airbox is cheaper too, just saw the lid off.

Why not just buy a new airbox lid, from a Ducati dealer ( I use Baines Racing at Silverstone). A brand new lid (Only he lid) only costs £8.52 plus VAT...

Cut it away in any fashion that suits you. And keep your original one, complete with sticker and breather tubes

Surely with the ram air system you get pressure in the air box. By cutting holes in it i would have thought that you would be loosing some of this pressure and therefore some of the top end performance.

Talking about airboxes and filters or lack of, I found this old piccy of my old Monty (I know it's not red or yellow - but very close to both) as I was rummaging about tonight - this was a pig to set up not helped by the lack of any filters and you had to make sure nothing got sucked in !?!?
It was definately female as she was pretty tempremantal, but well worth the constant tinkering as in her day there wasn't a lot to catch her round the lanes where I lived and she sounded superb at full chat.
