engine paint

does anyone know which paint i need for the side casings on my 916 and where to get it,poss in aerosol form.

I've seen posts where people have used hammerite smooth and said it's a fairly good match and finish.

i used halfords own make gloss black on my 750ss casings and belt covers came up really well but i did remove old paint back to metal

i used silver hamerite on the crank case ,it looks alright ,but not sure about side casings .

right there is a trick i have been told to using the hammerite smooth finish.

You need to buy the aerosol cans, then you puncture them and cut it open, this will gain you access to the paint inside.

WHY DONT YOU JUST USE THE BRUSH ON STUFF I HEAR YOU CRY!!

Well the aerosol can paint is loads thinner and when brushed on it gives a much better finish and gets in to all the little crevisis you need it in.

Quite a few of us on here have used Simoniz silver engine enamel, it's not a bad match to the original, just make sure the surfaces are clean and degreased.

A good idea if the casings are down to the bare metal is to use an etch primer first, it gives the enamel something to key to.

PJ1 do an engine paint that is designed for crankcases heat and chemical resistant it is silver and comes in aerosols for about a tenner a throw, The bad bit is its called Yamaha engine paint. Its a good match I used it on the covers and footrest hangers of my S4 I primed them with a zinc undercoat that sticks like an etching primer I cant remember the name of it but if anybody really wants to know I will search out a tin and find out. If anyone wants to break open an aerosol if you hold it upside down and press the nozzle it will release the pressure

I had real problems with the hammerite silver paint - it wouldn't go \ hasn't gone "off" - even now, 6 months later, its still quite soft and if you wipe a rag over the sump with any pressure - you get a smear of silver on the rag.....

That sounds like the paint over the early magnesium covers, saw two today on a racing 888 and a racing 916

The side covers on theS4 were silver so the Yamaha paint did the job. I had a 600 monster before that and repainted the side cases with Mercedes Anthracite celulose over the zinc undercoat. Used the oven on a very low heat to bake them worked perfectly. Never spilt brake fluid on them but I suspect if I had and didnt wash it off quick it would have messed them up. Heat weather and salt did not affect them though
