May be buying a 916SPS

Hello there, thanks for letting me in

I'm going to look over the bike at the weekend so have been lurking around picking up tips on things to look out for, possible weak charging system leading to a knackered battery, make sure the belts have been changed on time etc. but haven't found much on what a good price for one of these bikes is. From what I can tell (talking to the owner's Brother in Law at work) It's quite an old one, but has been well maintained. It's been converted so the owner can ride it with a prosthetic arm, but will be fully restored by the time I go to view it, and it is a red one (the bike, not the arm).

So what's a vague sort of ball park figure for one of these sexy beasties? Just a rough idea so I know whether I'm being shafted, or whether to dance around singing "haleluyah!"

Thanks.

It would have to be 'quite an old one' as you put it as the 916SPS was only built in the '97 & '98 model years..........also only available in red.

If it is a true SPS, as opposed to a tarted up standard 916, it will have a numbered plaque on the headstock.........if it hasn't then walk away. In any case it would be worth running the frame & engine numbers through Ducati UK to verifiy it provinence.

Depending on its mileage, condition and service history it'll probably be worth up to about £6,500 (ish), less is mucked about with IMO.

Welcome to the forum mate, the guys here helped me out with info and are a good bunch.

Values are always a tricky subject, condition/mileage and history are more important than the age of any 916 as they are all getting old now.
as RodH says make sure it is a pukka SPS, I emailed Ducati in Italy to confirm mine was a genuine SP.
If it all checks out and it's in nice condition then £6+ is a ball park figure I would have thought.

Let is know how you get on mate

Ian

Just another thought, weren't foggy reps also badged as 916sps? if it's one of them then £8K+ is more in order.

I found this useful

The foggy reps had a different plaque on the head stock. As previously mentioned the SPS series have a SPS plaque with the build number, also other quick checks look around the headstock area for the stearing head angle adjustment, lift the seat and check the sub-frame it should be alloy not steel (not a garantee but will tell you if is mutton dreased as lamb), check the engine serial number it should have "996" in it as this refers to the dispacement. All genuine SPS engines are 996cc and a quick visual check of the cam boxes the front one should be plain, and the engine cases should also have a slightly rough appearance. Good service history is important as well.

They are awsome pieces of kit and the engine is a marvel with tones of torque all over the rev range. I count myself lucky to have one of these beasts, but there again I'm biased.

Hmmm, no verdict as yet, it's still not up and running so I haven't even been to look at it. I can wait, it gives me more time to sort some money out for it.
