What's the advantage of a thinner chain, won't it just wear more quickly?

Not sure what advantage it is but i know the 520 chain is £20 cheeper depending on what make it is and the 748/916 series used a 520 as standard.

Mightn't it just be weight saving, at the expense of longevity?
Hmmmm......

Quote from Section8 Superbikes Ducati dealer
Your 749/999 comes equipped with a 525 pitch chain and sprockets.
Running 520 pitch gives you a weight advantage over a 525 setup. You will also find there are more sprockets available in 520. Another reason to convert to 520 is that if are going up 2 or more teeth on most bikes you will need a longer chain, so if you are buying a longer chain you should get the lighter/better one.

When I changed up 2 teeth on my rear sprocket I just got away with the standard length chain. The chain adjusters were as far forward as possible. I dont find it any less stable at speed but have noticed a big improvement in turning sharpness. I have also just changed the tyres to Michelin 2CT's and they are fantastic. So maybe a combination of both has helped make the 999 much better on the twisties :P :P :P :P

So why don't they fit 'em as standard? Confused.

Fair enough, definitely something I'll think about when they need replaced, so far I haven't been left wanting power.

I put a 14 on the front with a 39 on the rear and I think the gearing is great bud. What is yours set at? I find the acceleration is blinding and the response is fantastic.

I kept the 15 on the front as I was advised not to drop to a 14 as it puts alot of stress through the chain however I know plenty that have done this and not had any problems so far so who knows?

I've not changed the gearing on my 999S, but I'm running a 14/38 combination on the 916SPS, which I mainly use as a trackday bike. I've never suffered from lack of top speed with this ratio on the track, but the extra drive is great, my mate on his R1 can no longer out gun me down the straights!!!!!
