Service! What would you expect to pay for:

Just wanted to compare pricing at genuine Ducati dealerships for servicing on the following

6k service on a 999, so all the normal oil and filters etc, plus belts. plus 5 valve clearances and replace all half rings? Plus new front sprocket (down one tooth) and new radiator hose

Thanks in advance

It really depends on what you actually need servicing.
I recently had a full engine service, plus a new set of brake pads for £350.
(I replaced my own clutch/brake fluids and the fork oil does'nt need changing yet,...plus I have checked over the bike for loose nuts/bolts/bearings/etc)
Bike is an '05 999S.

i have just had my 999 serviced at italia classics in lincoln a couple of weeks ago. they did the 12k service including belts, 2 clearances, front brake pads, indicator and stalk, bottom radiator hose, all exhaust gaskets and it cost £850. i have run the brake pads in and my machine is running beautifully now!

Its getting a bit ridiculous paying out just under 20% of the bikes value for a service.

In a couple of years time the machine will have devalued considerably more. The cost of the servicing will have gone up also possibly nearing 28% of the machines value.

It comes to a point when one might ask when do I stop taking it in.

That's why I do it all myself. All it costs me is the bits.
Granted not everyone has the knowledge, tools and facilities to do it all themselves but any monkey can change oil, filter and air filter, as well as brake pads, brake and clutch fluids and coolant and check nuts and bolts and wheel bearings. That only leaves you paying for valve adjustments and belt changes.

That's true, Derek, although I'd add to your belts and valve clearances the sorting out of any fuel injection system woes.

My policy as far as that's concerned from now on is going to be; if the engine's running fine and you're satisfied with the fuelling, leave well alone!

I've decided I just can't afford to spend the sort of money on my current bike that I spent on my 748. I've always done my own oil changes, but I neeed to add further strings to my bow. A recent foray into the fuel tank convinced me that I can change my own fuel filters. Likewise the air filters, which only need cleaning, I can do myself. Clutch and brake fluid should be no problem. With a front and rear paddock stands I can take my own wheels off for tyre replacement, which, let's face it, is a good thing anyway, cos it's an opportunity to check that all is well with brakes and wheel bearings.
This small beer, of course, compared to what Ghost and others more mechanically competant and confident can do, but it all tots up to a saving. And is satisfying too.

I have done a rough calculation, and in doing three oil changes and a major service + belts I have paid for the tools and gadgets I had to go out and buy to be able to do the work myself.

If you are willing to learn there are others who will help if you get stuck.

Had a 6K service on my 998 last summer, Not much change out of a Grand

I think I shall do it myself this year, does a full service history justify the cost, will you recoupe when you sell the bike, I think not

jon.

Jon,
I agree... and if you keep all the receipts and document the mileage etc when you do the work, that is still a service history... and you have peace of mind knowing that the job has been done properly!!
