999 Front Pad thickness? Help required!

Hi

I just checked my front pads on the 999. In the manual it refers to a wear indicator groove, and as is normal practice says there should be some of the groove left. On my pads there is no groove, but still over 3mm of material left. On a 748 etc that would be an almost new pad! (well sort of!).

So how thick approx is a new pad, and do all pads have the wear indicator groove? My pads are Brembo items.

Doesn't look as if many of you 999 types ever check your brakes! Now there's a worry!!

No problem cos that nice Nogaromill has come to the rescue. Apparently the pads dont have the wear depth marks in them anymore, and 3mm per pad is more than enough. He tells me the new pads are about 4mm thick each.

So I have put them back in, after cleaning up the calipers and putting some copper grease on the back of the pad backplates, should be good for a few thousand more miles. So Davids advice cost him a sale, the price of integrity! Thanks for the help Nog.

BTW those pin and spring assemblies are a bit tricky until you get the hang of them! Definitely meant for someone with much smaller fingers than me!

Just found this thread,...and yes we do!
When the pad material gets down to around 1.5mm,its time to start thinking about changing them.

Very strange as I always go to new posts and I never saw this either.

But was going to say that maybe the current pad did not have grooves.

You need 1mm to pass an MOT.

Just adding to this, my pads are wearing unevenly (inside vs outside on the front) It looks like the pistons come out unevenly too (QED )

Has enayone stripped Brembos and taken he pistons out? Also when I tried to clean them I smeared copper grease on the exposd areas - I am now wondering if this is causing them to stick?

I'm fairly sure that you shouldn't have used coppergrease on the pistons, I think it can cause problems for the piston seals.
