Ah well, I've found out myself......

The new swingarm which looks exactly like the like the ones fitted to the Fila bike ridden by World Champion James Toseland. Not only does this new box section swingarm look the part it has led to a dramatic improvement in the overall rideability of the new 999. The new design is far more rigid without changing the standard dimensions, but the bonus here is that it is also now lighter by some 500g yet the torsional strength has gone up by 27%..................

but will it fit an older model?

yes of course it will.......

If you buy the kit the bearings are allready fitted, and you use your spacers from the old one.

Its a very easy conversion to change the old style swinger for a new braced version......

The spacers are identical to the early cast swinging arm, the shock and ride height adjuster slot straight in......along with the main pivot/frame bolt..

There are two things you will need to change...

1) You will need to run a 2005 exhaust link pipe including the horizontal header pipe....because the exhaust clearance on the braced swinging arm is different to the cast version...

2) The rear brake hose on the 2003 model runs under the cast swinging arm, the 2005 braced swinging requires the hose to run over the top....therefor you will need the later version hose...or a new Goodridge/similar version....

Also make sure if you buy a secondhand one you get the rear wheel spindle adjuster blocks as they are completely different to the early type....

When you come to change the arms over you will need to either support the weight of the bike via an abba stand or by lifting the engine/frame via a trolly jack or hoist of some sort...

The braced swinger is not cheap even second hand......be prepared to fork out anything from £350+ for a decent one (be wary of crash damaged ones)

This one clicky here is £550 squid to give ya an idea......

I can concur with all the above having just had the new style swing arm fitted to my 03 749s!!

I bought a mint second hand one (from you know where), just had to get the chain adjuster blocks. Everything else just swopped over and it was a very easy job!! I didnt need to change the brake line though as the standard one was long enough. Also didnt have any problems with the exhaust and I'm running the asymetric Termignoni system.

With regard noticing a difference, I had an ohlins rear shock fitted at the same time and havn't really had the time to feel the difference. It looks so much better though!!

Just my 2p's worth folks!!
