DIY - Ducati 999 Cambelt Change

Right Lads here we go........ I have done loads and loads of posts for the Duke, Brakes, wheels, removingthe exhaust pipes and Cleaning them, Cleaning the Rear Shock and removing it too. Sprockets, handlebars and some Electrical stuff ( Fuel Pump Relay ) etc and many more as Dan will tell you.

This is my second full year on the Duke and I am wanting to get to grips with the inside of the engine, such as the Valve Train and replacing the Cambelts. Would any kind-Hearted Soul take the time to do a post on lets say the cambelts just now? They will be two years old in October so there is plenty of time to learn the basics and I can change them over Winter for the next Spring.

It does'nt have to be a PHD on the in's and out's of Ducati's but some photo's, general info what to watch out for and most of all what tools you need for the job.

Who is up for it? What about V90? if you are still about.

I will definately come down to your part of the woods this year to the Ace and watch me get booked by the Police just for a laugh if anything.

Yeah....I'd be interested to know this too........??

Pic posts would be then most helpful if it's possible.......

Anyone got a picture of the Ducati belt tools we need and part numbers if their stamped with some.....would be a good starter for one..

I can supply engine photos as mines out of the frame at the moment....so if anyone needs some close ups of the belts etc so that 'timming marks' etc can be pointed out with text instruction then I'll post these for you....???

Could be a start of a really useful thread for both 999/749 owners........

Would you know the drill for changing these belts? Look at all the work that the Storm Trooper has done photographing his nice clean engine on his lovely engine Stand. Myself and many of the Lads on the Site would be eternally grateful if they could put us through the motions of replacing the belts.....WHAT !!!! Nobody, Oh Come on,....... Do I have to grovel even more? Or do I have to lick somebodies Butt?

By the way Storm Trooper, I like the carbon belt covers. Nice...... 8) 8) 8)

999 Timing belt set ups

Has anyone got any details on setting up the belts using a small microphone and notebook. Measuring the frequency (110 Hz) and if so could they post details on how they have done it, ie where to position the microphone and how/where to flick the belt etc. Thanks

You are spot on there Bud with that question. What to do before you take the old belt off. What to slacken and how to take them off and adjust after they are on. Remember that you only have to be off one tooth and not only is your wallet mega ****ed but so is your engine. Aligning up is eveything. This is a great start though. Keep up the good work.

Bike: Red ST2

My ST2 is 9 years old and bought in July last year with 3,600 miles with a sporadic service history (2 services, last in 2005). I changed oil, fiter and tyres (these had turned to plastic) immediately. I guess the belts need to be replaced asap.

Link to sonic thread mentioned in earlier post

For the audio frequency checking there is free stuff here. Iv'e downloaded and virus checked and they seem OK, but are untested and untried, so use at your discetion.

Now, Where can I buy the belts, or do I have to get them from a Ducati main dealer?

Belts changing - the half belt method

Has anybody tried this method - I have on other motors

What you do is :-

1. Using a sharp Knife cut the vertical cylinder belt longways ie creating two skinny belts on the same pulley

2. Align marks on all the pulleys or mark your own

3. loosen tensioner on the forward cylinder and remove the belt DO NOT MOVE ENGINE SHAFTS

4. Loosen the tensioner on the vertical cylinder

5. Cut the outer skinny belt off the vertical cylinder leaving the other skinny belt in position

6. install the new belt half on the vertical cylinder and butt up against the skinny belt

7. When you are happy that you have entered the new belt onto the pulleys, cut the remaining skinny belt off and push the new belt home.

8. Fit the belt to the forward cylinder ensuring your marks have'nt moved

9. tension up

Viola
