DIY - How to change the ECU on a 749/999

Hi folks...

I know a few people have asked where the ECU is and how to change it on the 749/999 series so I have taken a few pics which hopefully might help......

The pictures should help the step by step guide......

XP...

1) Disconnect the battery and remove it from it's housing
2) Un-do the three allen head bolts holding the battery box to the frame and engine
3) Pull the whole housing unit out to the right
4) Un-do the 4 Philips head screws which holds the heat plate on to the rear of the battery box housing
5) Remove the heat plate
6) Un-do the two allen head bolts on the front of the housing just under where the battery sits (there are two bolts inside so you'll need a socket on them)
7) Those two bolts hold the ECU in place so you will need to remove these bolts and then release the two 'cam' type connection blocks which fit on the ECU
! Note:- When you remove those two bolts you also release an earthing strap so dont forget to replace this strap when you come to re-fit
8 ) Push down on the plug release catches on top of the ECU plugs and then push the 'cam' type lever so it releases the plug from the ECU body....
! Note:- You can only do one plug at a time.....!!

Once the plugs have been released the ECU will come out....

Just complete the reverse to re-fit......

999 ECU

Can a broken ECU be replaced with a used one?
I believe ECUs that come with exhaust systems can
be used in different bikes if they have not been coded
with the red key,but stock ones only work together with the original
gauge(they are coded).
Second hand ECUs are available but I could not make
it work because of the immobiliser.
Worked well when i purchased a complete set(gauge,
ECU, ign. lock).

Hi Scuderia Fatanagli

Your quite right buddy.....
If the ECU has not been coded (via the red key) then it can be used in another 'like for like' machine....

Trouble with buying a second hand one is that you run the risk of buying one that is coded as there is no way of telling until you have fitted it....

If you do buy second hand be sure to check with the seller that they can assure you that it will work otherwise you may as well just throw it away...

Now do some instructions for doing it standing on your head with the battery bit fitted to the bike..........

ECU

Experiences of aftermarket 749/999 ECUs, anyone?
FIM and Ignitech are already available, Nemesis should be
available soon.
There's Megasquirt too, that is probably the most common engine
control unit out there, for cars, bikes and anything that needs fuel and sparks.

We have a 749 that has been put together from ebay.We have the
throttle bodies and airbox(wiring loom and gauge too). We don't know anybody who would actually have an aftermarket ECU installed and working.
First xx9 bikes converted to racing scrapped the original ECU and wiring altogether
and used the old box. That is not really an option anymore, I guess that was
done to get rid of the imobiliser and to get a "chippable",adjustable ECU.

Ideas and recommendations?
