DIY 999/749 Bip to Mono conversion
Hi everyone...
Been looking through some of the 999/749 threads and there isn't a full descriptive DIY thread for a Bip to Mono conversion....
So the sun was out and I was a little bit bored (yeah I know I should have been out riding my bike.... ) so I thought I'd have a tinker with some spares........
Took some pics and put this together for everyone........
Fingers crossed it's easy reading........
999/749 Bip to Mono conversion
Step one. Bip seat unit removal
Tools needed
8,10,17mm Socket set with various extention bars
4,5,6,8mm Hex keys
Classic view of a 999/749 standard Bip seat unit and subframe.
1) Remove rear seat pad
2) Remove rear Bip 4mm panel/subframe Hex bolts (Marked A)
3) Remove 2x 6mm seat/subframe hex bolts (Marked B) one on each side.
4) Remove 2x 5mm under seat/subframe Hex bolts (Marked C)
5) Lift the Bip tail unit up and look under the seat, you'll see a 17mm seat/tank connection bolt (Marked D). Remove this bolt to release the complete seat and Bip tail unit.
6) You will be left with just the rear Bip subframe/heat plate/exhaust system.
Picture of the seat and Bip tail unit.
7 Remove the 2x 5mm subframe/exhaust connection Hex bolts (Marked E)
8 Remove the rear 8mm subframe/exhaust connection Hex bolt (Marked F)
9a Remove 2x 6mm + 10mm nut Subframe/Main frame Hex bolts (Marked G) R/H side
9b Remove 2x 6mm + 10mm nut Subframe/Main frame Hex bolts (Marked H) L/H side
10) Remove the complete Bip subframe and you will be left with just the heat pad lying against the exhaust.
This can be left as it is ready to place the Mono subframe on.
Picture of the Bip subframe along with the Bip tail unit..
Step two: Mono unit fitment
This is the best bit....Fitment of your Mono subframe and Mono tail unit.....
1) Place Mono subframe on to replace the Bip subframe.
2) Replace the 4x 6mm Hex bolts + 10mm nuts to secure the Subframe to the Main frame.
Note: Do not tighten these up yet as you need some movement in the subframe to connect the rear Subframe exhaust bolts.....
3) Replace the 2x 5mm Subframe/Exhaust connection Hex bolts (Marked I)
4) Replace the rear 8mm Subframe/Exhaust connection bolt (Marked J)
Note: This process can be a little tricky because you have three holes to line up at once..... What I mean by this is you have to line up the Subframe hole with the Heat shield hole along with the Exhaust holes..... ....thats why you need to leave the Subframe/Main frame connection bolts lose....
Its a bit fiddly but a bit of patience and you sort it......
5) Once the subframe is secure, place the Mono tail unit and seat over the top and re-connect the Seat/Tank bolt as shown in the picture (Marked K)
Note: Have the Seat/Tank bolt and washer handy as this process can also be a bit 'fingers and thumbs'......
Re-tighten with the 17mm socket.
6) Once the Mono unit has been secured to the Tank, lower the whole unit down over the subframe and exhaust.
Look under the rear of the Mono unit ans ensure the metal plug is connected in the rubber bung which sits just above the rear Subframe/Exhaust connection bolt.
Press down gently....
7) Refit the 2x 6mm Seat/Subframe connection Hex bolts (Step 3 of the removal stage)
8) Refit the 2x 5mm underseat connection Hex bolts (Step 4 of the removal stage)
9) Stand back and admire your hard work.........
Note: Just be sure you have tightened everthing up by checking round once again....always pays to double check.....
Hope this thread has been of use to you....

More useful than you can Imagine, just in the process of working my 06 749 into a mono s type lookalike, the photos are great and I have got the subframe, speaking with Italsport in Bury about seats, I have seen some shocking aftermarket jobs and want a decent conversion.

Awesome
Credit to you for a superb thread.
I have modified my sub frame to adapt from Mono to Bip and vice versa without changing the frame. Honesatly, a bit of TLC and careful grinding with an angle grinder gives superb results. I don't know why Ducati has not thought of this themselves? I can convert my bike to Mono from Bip in just under 20 mins. Ok it means modifying the steeel sub frame but once done you have the choice of both with minimum fuss.
If anyone interested then contact me for further details.
Phil...

Thankyou XP ... I will be doing this conversion next weekend ... It's always nice to have a read through before attempting, also gonna be fitting a new exhaust, race filter, PCIII, rearsets, an assortment of carbon  and new numberplate, rear lights, etc etc ....
But this weekend I'm gonna be doing a few miles whilst the weather is good !!!
Cheers
Simon

Hi Phil,
I have read similar threads that have mentioned adapting a Bip subframe to fit a Mono seat unit.....
Would be great if you do a write up on your adapted frame......
Cheers

I was going to do a thread on installing the PCIII, but i have a bracket from JHP so it won;t be excatly as some, also want to do a thread on the rear ests although it's just a case of undoing and re-deoing up a few bolts i just want everyinge to see the rearsets ... Honestly really, really sweet looking !!! (Cheers David Nogaromill )
Will keep you posted in the near future !!!

Mono to Bip conversion
Hi XP,
I will get my head into adding the thread on how I did the Bip sub conversion. Will get the pics taken and uploaded hopefully within the next few days or so. Must admit, it looks the mutts when done and so easy to change over once complete.
The only difference that can identify if its a Bip or Mono is the seat lock mechanism on the subframe. I have incorporated that into the quick release for the tailpiece.
Keep your eyes posted and I will have something soon.
