So i'm looking for a mk3 valve spring motor.

Having had a 250 mark III myself some years back, I'm intrigued by your comment "Widecase"

So are there two crankcase sizes?

I was under the impression that the only difference between the Desmo and mark III was the head and therefore the valve operation.

The names wide case and narrow case refer to the rear engine mountings. On a narrow case the engine mountings at the front and the back are the same size. On the wide case engine the rear mounting is about twice the width. The wide case singles began production around 1968 and replaced the earlier narrow case singles.

Hi,
Graham is correct.
The wider engine mounts at the rear stiffened up the frame/swinging arm mounts.
But also the widecase singles bottom end and gearbox along with a few other parts were stronger/better, the sump also holds more oil.
On the downside the motor weighs a few pounds extra!
For this reason a lot of Classic racers prefer to use the narrow case engines.
When you've got so little power to play with, you don't want to be carry any extra weight if you can help it!
For the road the widecase bikes are a far better machine IMHO.

I have a '78 900SS and an '82 900SS. Mine since 1989, the '78 is one of the first black/golds made, registered in April '78, and has the 'pre-production' paintjob. The engine has been rebuilt by Paul K (DTS) and has V2 cams, high capacity oil pump and a new three dog gearbox. I replaced the original shaved calipers with goldlines and the Speedline wheels for four-bolt FPS. Otherwise it's stock. Mine since 2005, the '82 is all stock other than silver-painted wheels. Both have 40mm Del'Ortos and Contis. I have single and dual seats for both. Here they are with one of each.

Lightbulb

I have a 1966 160 Monza Jr. basket case (valvespring narrowcase single), a 1977 900SD Darmah and a 1980 900SSD Darmah SS. The Darmah SS is away being resprayed at the moment but I may post some pics of all three when I get it back.

Having met Mr R I can confirm that a. He is a font of all knowledge on Ducati related matters. b. An extremely talented mechanic/engineer. c. A top bloke and party animal. d. Most likely Paul Samples inspiration for Ogri (or his lovechild).

I'm now awaiting Mr R's reply saying, 'actually I met Paul sample back in 19** at the Bol D'or/TT/Assen!' (delete as appropriate)

Bevel Owners

I'm lucky enough to own a bevel Duke.I found it at the now defunct importer "Bike Direct" in Bristol. It was in poor condition, having been stood in a dockside warehouse in Japan (I feel a certain irony in the fact that my bevel came from Japan!) for several years.I restored it over a period of 7 months doing all the mechanicals myself but farming out the chrome and powder coat locally. The tank and seat base retain original paint.
Didn't realise at the time of purchase just how rare the Hailwood Mille is with only six or seven recorded examples in the UK. If you want one there is one currently on ebay finishing at 7.45 today but it's already up to £10,888!
It makes an interesting comparison my 916sp and 1098s but is non the less unmistakably family! The 1098 could benefit from the Hailwoods fuel range! Another aspect is the noise. It's louder the the other two by some margin! banging Castle Combes noise test meter round to 102 at idle! Didn't stop them letting me out to do some parade laps with Tony Rutter last year, which was a real privilege.
Would be nice to more bevels out and about but I do understand peoples reluctance especially at this time of year.I note that Taunton Deane have just last night salted some of the roads in Somerset again!

Nope I'm sorry to disappoint you Chris but I've never met the great man!
I have however known lots of the people spoofed in his Ogri cartoons and have known quite a few 'Malcoms' in my time...............
