996 on the dyno

I had a bit of an impulsive session on the dyno today, I was picking the bike up from a guy who painted the mirrors for me (they were slightly off- red and a bit scuffed), and as I was leaving he said "have a look at the guy over the road, just had a dyno installed"...

So, as I have just had the bike I thought it would be nice to how it is running, so asked the guy who's place it was if he had time (being a Sunday!), and he said yeah, go for it.

Came out at 112BHP at the rear wheel, which with termis, chip and nothing else is about right, so about 125ish at the crank .. Not bad for 19k miles, I will dig the graph out later and put it up.

If anyone else fancys a Dyno day in the midlands, it is in cradley heath, and he will do it for £15-20 a bike for a power run and fuelling check if we get more than 10 bikes attending, so anyone up for it? Could be a good meet-up and a bit of a laugh? Dates to be arranged if anyone is interested?

68 Lbs/ft at the rear wheel . Dyno operator recons a power commander will give about another 6-8 BHP in the midrange, and same again for the torque, and will make the throttle response much better. Could be an option next month, maybe

A 996 Bip with Termi's and chip I'd be disappointed if it didn't make around the 118rwbhp mark.
I've seen ST4S's make 118 with the FIM Ultimap UM222 single injector per cylinder conversion and they're tuned for torque.
With 19,000 miles on the clock the motor should be nice and loose/free revving, if it were my bike I'd have the heads off, lap the valves and shim it up correctly and set the squish while I was in there,
'Guesstimate' figures for the crankshaft don't really meen anything, it's what comes out at the back wheel that counts.
Chris at CJS has recently got 118rwbhp from a near standard 916 Bip after mapping and he thinks that there's a bit more to come...

I thought they were more than that (that's just my lack of 996 knowledge though!). This is the 848's dynograph, shortly after it was run in. I'd like to take it back on a cold day, now it's got a couple of thousand miles on it

i think the 996 was a funny bike power wise as i believe it had much more torque than the the 916 but not much more BHP.
the 998 was the best engine.
does you 848 not make it power at higher rev's ? only asking as i have not ridden one.
it's more like a jap twin more rev's at top end to make the power.

It feels exactly as the dynograph shows...nothing happening below 6000rpm, then it really kicks off above 7K and pulls hard all the way to the limiter It is quite revvy and I would like some more torque out of it, but once you're used to it it feels great.

Just telling it like it is Jimmy.
My mildly tuned 851/916 makes 110rwbhp and that's with single injectors, inlet valves 4mm smaller, smaller Ex valves than a 996 Bip and without the benefit of the 916 airbox/intake system.
To be totally honest I was a bit disappointed with that.

Not too worried about the result to be honest, dynos are NOT gospel, just an interesting tool to check the engine out, and it's nice to know it is running fine. Think a power commander might be on the list though, as the part throttle and low end fuelling is a bit poor, apparently they all suffer from it, and I can feel it on the road as it is slightly jerky from a closed to partial throttle.
