Hypermotard or Monster

Hello everyone,

I currently have a Z750, but have always fancied a Monster. Popped to a dealer for a ride of a S2R 1000 to find that they are very thin on the ground! (New model 1100 in the shape of the new smaller monster perhaps?) Anyway, I then started looking at the Hypermotard! I have a test ride booked for Friday

. I have 2 questions, firstly what are peoples thoughts on owning a Hypermotard (I have a Fazer 600 with Givi luggage, so that's my 'distance' bike), and would you choose it over a Monster?

It would be used for the odd trip to the TT, and fun blasts.

Its the "fun blasts" that matters if you are going for the Hyper.

I purchased mine and replaced a monster 620ie. The Hyper is so much easier to ride and gives you bags more confidence when ripping through the twisties which is where it holds its own against pretty much anything. If you are looking for something that will travel all day with ease and comfort then it's really not the bike for that but as you say you have the Fazer for that. That said people have toured around europe on them and having ridden out myself for day trips I find it much more cumfy than the little monnie was. Motorway blasts can be had and it will happily run into the 120's if you had a runway or private race track however the wind against you over 85 is tough to deal with. I'm short so it's not to bad for me to tuck in and there is always the HM windscreen add on which may help a bit.

But it's the fun side that the HM excels. It really can't be beat and everytime I take it out the grin is there. WARNING The naughty bike is a danger to your licence. You will want to pop wheelies which is does with ease. It never, ever allows you to go under 30 even when you think you are you look down and it's crept up. It will turn even the most saintly biker into a devil. Go on do it you know you want to.

I have a 998FE and had a 1098s last year, wanted to do something similar myself. Test rode Monster S4RS last year and Hypermotard S couple of weeks ago...........picking the Hypermotard on the 1st Sept

That speaks for itself..........
(not that I'm saying the Monster is crap - bloody great bike as well just prefered the Hyper).

Hyper is a great toy, only reason I did not get it is the touring problem.
If I were to choose between Hyper and S4Rs well S4Rs all the way, miles of fun and touring and keep up in bends and keep up (is faster) in line.

Metropolis does not have a good opinion around this site. I had a bed incident (two) with them as well. There are much worse places to go to but then there are better ones.

Lol, did pop in at half 5, but they were already putting all the bikes away and I seemed to just be in the way. For all they knew, I had 10 grand burning a hole in my pocket, and could have bought a bike there and then!! Needless to say, first impressions and all that, should I go for the Hypermotard (seems monsters are very thin on the ground now), I'll get it elswhere. Pro-Twins is where I'm test-riding on Fri, the chap Brad/Brett? seemed really genuine, relaxed and not too pushy...

In short, got new bike. It was my first bike and my first Ducati. It was the first time I got a used bike from private seller as well (before that got my 125 new from dealer).
At that time I knew none about inner running of Ducati I only knew they are so luvry. I had some strange noises coming out of the engine (as it tunred out not strange but normal which any Ducati dealer should know). Went to M with it and left the bike there for general fluid, pads just consumables check and change. When I got back they told me in relation to my strange noise they need to put engine apart. I was thinking got a lemon but told them go ahead. When I got bike back it was exactly the same not even certain they opened her up but did charge me as if they did. Strange sound was still there and I was later told that vibration and kind of diesel engine work sound is normal. Bike was running strong and now runs strong with new owner.
Before I sold it I went to Metropolis for some parts to be given wrong ones and it was not a small mistake as 2001 was carb so needed jet kit not injectors (which cost a fortune).

It is not a anti add as I might have just been unlucky and ended up with two guys which they got rid off the next day but that was more then it for me.

Stevie, I have had both the Hypermotard and an S2R800.
Both are fantastic bikes. Now I have the S2R and sold the HYM - do I regret it? Possibly. The S2R is fantastic to look at and it pulls my heart strings every time I look at it in the garage, but I dont enjoy riding it anywhere near as much as I did the Hypermotard.

The best one to ride by far was the Hypermotard. It is great fun.

The best one to look at was the Monster.

Give them both a go, and decide which one is best for you.

If you already have a bike for distances I would suggest the HYM is the best bet. It is so much more fun to ride and it's still a Ducati.
If you intend to lose the Fazer and replace it with one bike, the S2r would probably be better - the tank range on the hypermotard and higher riding position might be an issue as a tourer.

Both are great bikes.
Enjoy whichever one you choose.

I like you, looked at both the Monster & Hypermotard, I already had 2 1098's and wanted to keep the R, but the Tricolore wasn't as enjoyable as it used to be. So I pondered a Monster Tricolore, but after riding an S4RS for less than an hour in Italy I realised that I didn't like it and still wanted some fun factor. I don't really ride to work apart from the occassional dry Friday when I finish at lunch so can have a ride(the 100 miles a day on a motorway isn't fun on 2 wheels), so I chose the Hyper (S model) and have traded my 1098 Tricolore. Even if it ends up being wet or I get wet whilst out on the Hyper I won't be too bothered.

Well, I couldn't resist after riding it - so I pick up a shiney new hypermotard on Saturday!
