What's this on my Header Pipes?
New owner of GT1000, so be patient! I have three welded-in bosses on my exhaust system. One is on the front cylinder header pipe a few inches from the port, the second on the rear pipe at the top bend, and the third on the link pipe between the headers just before they go into the end cans. The one on the link pipe has a plug and wire coming from it, so I assume that is the lambda/O2 sensor for the FI. The forward two are blanked off with plugs.
What are they for? I can only guess that they are for fitting extra sensors for other markets (California?) where there are tighter emissions regs. The pipes are quite deformed where they are fitted and I'm sure they restrict the gas flow to some extent.
Answers on a postcard. TIA.

Not familiar with the bike but can only assume its where the sniffers are put, to measure CO values.

Makes sense - so why are they blanked off on my bike (UK-spec model)? If they aren't needed, I'd dearly love to get rid of them! They must totally mess up the gas flow.

They're blanked because they are only needed / used when the tester puts the probe in to do the test. To gain access, the blank is taken out and the probe put into the tapped port. Don't think they bother gas flow much

And I have blanked off ones on my 749 too as most others do. It won't bother your gas flow any that you would or wouldn't notice.

I'd be more bothered by the Lamda sensor. Horrible nasty things, checking our emissions then altering fuel mixture so we don't pollute the environent. What about performance and noise? Don't those Eurocrats have any consideration for our feelings. We buy Ducatis, not Smart cars. I want to go fast very loudly, through built up areas, scaring children and annoying old people. Well that's it. This is where I draw the line and make a stand. Let's get Lamda sensors banned. All who are with shout "I love global warming".
Rant over.

Hi,
Your correct that the 2 forward plugs are used to check the CO values, usually at around tickover for emission purposes.
They're also used when creating a full custom map for a tuned bike, measurements are taken every 250rpm or so, this info' is then used to remap out all of the rich or weak spots on a new chip, or in the case of a FIM Ultimap to reprogram it.

Something like that, didn't get much sleep. I'm better now though. Long live the Lamda sensors. I like them now. Low emissions are the way forward. Save the planet. Give the government more green taxes. Hug a tree. See, I'm in a much better mood. I might put the cat back on the Monster today.

Why has it got a size 10 buried in its ring after scratching the tank.

Heh - thanks for the replies, folks. So the plugs are for servicing/tuning, rather than regular use. Makes sense to me. I won't get rid of them if they are of some use getting the thing correctly set up when I get my Termis! I don't like the way the pipes have to be flattened to weld them in - the one on the rear cylinder especially seems to reduce the pipe diameter by quite a bit, and create a pinch point near the exhaust port, just where you need the gas to be flowing freely.
Speaking of which, are the Termis and air filter cover/chip only available from Ducati dealers? I have Googled myself silly, but I can't find anything from an aftermarket supplier. Or rather, anything cheaper - I found a couple of full systems, but they were megabucks.
Would any system for a Sports Classic fit?
