SportClassic GT 1000 Not Listed (Insurance)

Well, I passed my test today

I set aside this afternoon for finding quotes for a new SportClassic GT 1000. Alas it seems so many insurers simply don't have this bike listed. And it's a real pain to find this out after filling in nearly identical forms.

Devitt Insurance even has the bike listed on their Ducati page, but it's not listed in the quote form. I rang them up, went through the same process, and was told sorry, they can't insure it if it isn't listed.

Another thing that gets me is the question "Have you had a motorcycle insurance policy", to which the answer is "yes". Then it states that the expiry date MUST be before the date I want cover to start on this new policy. Why is this? I can't see that the two are related. So to proceed I have to wrongly put down "no, I don't have a policy".

It's just so time-consuming. I thought for about a two minutes that this was going to be easy.

So, not really a question. A bit of a rant about insurance companies, and I just want to get quotes for a Ducati.

Indeed. I can't remember what the result was (I have insurance website overload now).

Most of the sites were quoting about £2,400 to £2,800 fully comp, or about £1,200 TPFT. One "find a best quote" site came in with some ridiculous quotes - about £10,000. How I laughed.

I had a quote from Ducati Insurance (www.ducatiinsurance.co.uk) which came in much cheaper than the others, but with a slightly bigger excess - £440 + £400. I wonder if I missed something here. I am sure I put down all the details correctly. I might re-quote just in case. Does anyone have any experience of them?

On the basis of £440 I'll be in the showroom on Saturday

Welcome, and good luck with your new machine. I've been with Duc insurance for 2 yrs, found the price to be competitive, and actually came down this year by approx £100. I got so hacked off trying all the ad's in MCN and got sick of trotting out the same responses to all the questions, so stayed with them. They also throw in free breakdown insurance. Guess the big test is when you put a claim in......touch wood etc, but easy to deal with and seem to want the business. Steve

EBike definitely have it listed, thats where I got mine sorted, I was already with them which made it easier, I just added the bike to the existing policy and then got them to remove the old bike (Suz SV650) when I sold it.
My Mrs has a Monster 695 which she insured through Ducati Insurance who were about the cheapest and were aware the bike existed.
Im not sure about the "old policy must expire before the new one". I assume you have a bike already. Have you asked your current insurers for a quote on the GT1000?
Persevere, its a great bike, you will love it. Where are you based?

Yes, no. I spent (wasted) fifteen minutes trying to get through to them. I know there is the possibility of getting a multi-bike quote, so I'll try them again later.

Oh I will! I'm not far from you, actually. I work in Mayfair and pass by Buckingham Palace every night on my way home.

You need to talk to the brokers over the phone and get them to (a) add it to their database and (b) contact the insurance providers to get a quote. That's what I had to do with my 695 when I first got it, and now that I had to reinsure it.

Because you cannot have the bike insured on two policies at the same time. Why would you want to have your new insurance valid if you already have one anyway? You still wouldn't get paid twice, as that info is shared.

There's a good chance of this happening now, as I put down a deposit at Metropolis today I should pick the bike up on Wednesday or Thursday.

They didn't have any GT1000s to test ride, but they let me have a ride on (I think) a Monster 695 which was fun. I didn't really need any convincing.

There was another bloke there who had just bought a grey GT1000 and the bike was being handed over.

Well, my name is on a "sold sign" attached to the bike, so I guess that makes me a Ducatisti noob.

Bike: '06 Sport 1000

How's the bike jre?

I can't decide between this and a Sport 1000 Biposto.
Hmmm...

Also I wonder where you ended up insuring it?

When I tried to insure mine I had the same problem. I went with Bennetts in the end - the bike isn't listed with them, but the girl spoke to said they would go for the nearest model - the PS 1000 I think. That's what is on my certificate.
