Was also at Donington in '79 when he crashed in practice and couldn't race but did a lap of honour for the fans. What a man!
We travelled up to Donington, two up and with camping gear on my 400/4, only to hear that Hailwood had crashed during practice that day. We were really looking forward to seeing him in the same race as Sheene the following day. Still two of my greatest heroes. The applause was staggering when Hailwood did a lap of honour in an open-top car, I think it was a Bugatti but not sure.

Ron Haslam and Steve Parrish also raced at that meeting.

mike the bike

I remember thinking , that just because a certain Mr. Hailwood who owned Kings of Oxford could persuade ducati to build his son a desmo 250 twin, and then for him to go out & mop the floor with everything out there,( I was there ) I thought money was the answer for mike , but when he kicked the crashed mv back into shape at sarahs & then ripped out one of the throtle slides & finished the race (cant remember what position )I thought what a MAN....And who would have thought he would have been killed on the way home from the fish & chip shop... sad day....

I'm not sure that he actually ripped out the throttle slide, but legends are built on this stuff!
Money helps but it can't make up for a lack of ability...
Mike's dad backed his son, but I never heard of any stories about riders being asked to throw a race...
Which's more than can be said for Barry Sheene and his dad Franco Sheene.
If you doubt me read Roger "Reg" Marshall's book.

Steve

Hi,
I seem to remember that the throttle came loose and that Mike grabed a hammer and bashed it back on during a pit stop????
On the cheating front re Barry Sheene...
Check out Roger "Reg" Marshall's book.

well it was alittle while ago now, but i do remember that when we pulled up in his drive (we did not know, who we were buying off), there was a black mercedes, with the number plate PEN15, which after our visit, was quite adapt. but without doubt the 1 thing i remember, is his british champsionship bike, mounted on a wooden plinth, in the middle of his living room (it was a big living room), that was very kool. but talk about 'full of themselves'.
