Ducati Monster Seat Staples Damage Tank Paint!
Seat Staples Damage Tank Paint!
Ok, so you’ve saved hard for the bike of your dreams - a Ducati MONSTER. You’ve given up fags, boozing and dumped the girlfriend but it was all worth it ‘cos you can finally afford a brand new one. The great day arrives and you hand over your ‘hard earned’ and ride it home – the long way round ‘cos you don’t want to get off the thing. You start to have a look around your new pride & joy and remove the seat to see that the staples that fix the cover to the base have damaged the paint. "OH SH*T" you shout -great bike Ducati but a bit of attention to detail required here. So what can you do about it? I have heard that warranty claims have been made for this problem and a new tank supplied. The same thing will happen again though so here is my simple fix. Take a flat bladed screwdriver and just prise out those suckers. Stick the cover to the seat base with Evo-Stick contact adhesive and job’s a good ‘un.
I covered the damaged paint with carbon-fibre patches.

Not sure if all models affected. I've read of S2R & S4R bikes with same problem but it could be random and depend where Luigi whacks in the staples?

Maybe he did mine on a friday afternoon, in a good mood for the weekend.
I would still go back to them tho and get a new tank, if you have remedied the problem, its not going to happen again but you shouldnt have to put up with a damaged tank just because Luigi was suffering pmt when he put yours together.

You could be right about Luigi J
I did take my bike in for a warranty claim for the sidestand which was bent and the bike was leaning over too far. I got that fixed but later noticed all the scratches under the cans where someone had shoved the paddock stand in. Probably some 'couldn't care less' spotty nerd on job experience did it while looking at Page 3 and eating a jam sandwich all at the same time
If I had got a new tank, there would probably be damage to something else when they fitted it. I've fixed it ok and it doesn't show.
I'm coming to 6k mile serice soon and I'm doing that myself even though warranty is then void. The bike as supplied had obviously not had a pdi and I did complain to Ducati UK but they didn't seem too interested.
Still a great bike though

Hey V
Dont forget about the changes in law regarding your servicing, you dont have to go to a Duke dealer now, just a reputable garage ( New Laws Regarding Servicing?). How about you ponder the question, could you not request a new tank under the warrranty and tell them due to their total lack of care thus far, you would like to fit it yourself, i mean it aint rocket science and surely that would not invalidate your warranty?

Tuono! Fantastic looking bike and if I didn't have the Monster I would be interested myslf. Let us know what hubby thinks. Mind you the weather is still going to be crap right through weekend according to met office and I haven't ridden for 3 weeks myself now.
I like doing my own work on my bike and really don't like anyone else touchng it. The engine has done over 5k miles now and if something was going to go wrong it would most likely have happened by now so I'm going to risk voiding the warranty. I could get caught out by the electronics failing which can happen anytime, and a new ecu is expensive, but if I add-up the cost of 6k and 12k services I've saved that money anyway.
Also I'm not very impressed with the paint on the tank; it marks easily so I may get it resprayed sometime in future. I think I'm going to keep this bike for a bit, which is unfortunate for my neighbours

Decided against Taz in the end, we were a bit pushed for time so went to Planet in Li sestershire...know it?
They used to be a Aprillia dealer, I couldnt fault them, really nice bloke dealt with us, Ed, top marks for him. He was completely honest and had a file on the bike that we were interested in and basically gave it to us to have a look at, so that we knew pretty much all of its history before we made a decision. When I went into haggling mode and told him that we would try selling the Bandit elsewhere to get a better price he actually gave us a better price on it and reduced the mille too, he said that he liked the bandit and could do with it in stock as it was an excellent version. We were ten minutes late dropping the the part X in and the shop had shut, but there were still some guys in there and as they were leaving they came and spoke to my other half......probably a degree of sympathy cos it waz bloody freezing....and he looked it. They were more than happy to unlock, de-alarm and take the bike off him rather than him have to bring it back another day. So he is hopefully picking it up on his return to this fair isle, lets hope for some good weather so we can have us some fun.
