Monster 583 rev counter advice please
We have rebuilt a Monster 583 engine to go into TP's bike. His old engine was the SS one with the drive for the rev counter built into the heads, but the Monster engine does not have this.
I'm looking for advice on what tacho to fit. I have heard the DP one works off the coils, but can't find one for sale, so suggestions please.
Cheers

I'd quite like to put a rev counter on mine so I'd find the info useful as well
I think Earkle may have done it with a DP one

The DP one is a doddle to fit, if you get one I have photos of where to take the feed from. They work really well too.
Not all others will work well, or even at all, something to do with resistance loading and pull down, whatever that is . . . .

You don't really need one. When there's no one in front of you then you know the gearing is just right.

Any idea how much the DP ones cost?

A bit more advice needed please.
I fitted a 916 tacho on to the bike but had a problem. I used the original wiring and plug from the back of the tacho taking one lead to feed off the ignition pack to the rev signal on the tacho. The other two I used for the positive and neutral. With everything wired up but the tacho not plugged in all was fine. As soon as I connected the tacho the revs fell and it ran like a dog, only really firing on one cylinder. When I disconnected the tacho the revs would pick back up. I tried 4 different tachos but all with the same results. Eventually it ran really rough, only on one cylinder. I disconnected everything and put it back how it was but by then it was too late. I seem to have fried one of the ignition packs.
At the wekend I tried a tacho that takes a feed by wrapping the feed wire round the HT lead several times, but the tacho was erratic and unusable. I know that I need to take a feed from the ignition pack wire and I know it's the correct wire as that's the same one that the dyno guy used to take a feed for the dyno to work.
So, how should I have wired it up? Zimbo has suggested fitting a diode on the rev signal wire to prevent feedback to the ignition pack, but should I have to?
Cheers
