Monster 600 Starter Problem?

I have a 51 plate Ducati Monster 600 Dark. Love the bike, although over the past week it has developed a starter problem. Been in to Riders in Bridgewater once, they said it was a dodgy connection and they cleaned it and it worked ok, for 1 day.

With the ignition key in the lights all work fine, so I know it's not a battery problem. The only sign of something wrong is the rev counter, that every now and again goes mental! When I press the starter, absolutely nothing. No sign of life, it takes a good few attempts for it to kick in, then starts ok.

Any suggestions? I have it booked in for next week for a thorough going over, but would appreciate your thoughts...

Could be the starter solenoid as it seems to come to life after a while or so.. in my experience the first signs that a solenoid is on its way out. Is there an audible click when you thumb the starter? If so then consider the solenoid knackered. Loads of threads on here about starters and such but if your solenoid does need replacing there is a nice cheap and cheerful one from a honda cb250 that fits perfect (at least on the 900ss) that doesnt cost an arm and a leg (around £15)

Do you need to push it or does it start with no "help"?
I had a problem like that - with the ignition key in, it looked as if the battery was ok, but it only started by beeing pushed.
as silly as it may seem, the problem was not the starter, but the battery - it was all dried out!

A little late

you probably already figured this out, but try the ignition switch/button and check for continuity. 9.9 times out of 10 the simplest problem is the correct one.
