M900

Hello,

I have a 1999 M900 that I have recently re-built from the ground up. Before I tore it apart it was having some carb problems that I new of. After it was all back together it had the same known problems. I rebuilt the carb and took it to the shop and got it Dino tuned. After I rode it for about ten miles I was still fouling plugs, I put some gas treatment in the tank and new plugs and it ran great for about fifty miles!

After that though the plugs fouled again, I changed them, ir ran and then it died! I checked the plugs, however this time they weren't fouled.

My next thought as to what the problem may be is something that has to do with the ignition, however I have no clue as to where to begin this process. I had the valves adjusted about 1000 miles ago, and I put two new timing belts on. Is it possible the belts have settled a bit and the timing may need to be adjusted? If anyone has had this problem and has any sort of idea, I am open to try any thing!

Why are you using gas treatment, it shouldn't need it, are the spark plugs the correct grade, when you say fouled-up do you mean sooted-up?

If it runs fine when plugs are cleaned then it sounds like a sticking choke .... the sliders on the mikunis can be a pig ....some glide along easily whilst others have a definite 'three stage' feel to them, and can stick in the 'on' position, even when the handlebar lever appears fully off.

A very common problem with the mikunis is ovaling of the emulsion tubes that the needles run in. Not uncommon for them to need replacing after only 10k miles, but this would also be accompanied by 'lumpy' running of the engine up to 5k revs, where it will then seem to clear it's throat and pickup fine....

Good luck

I used the gas treatment because I repainted the tank and I was thinking that when I did this some water may have gotten into the tank. I just recently changed the plugs again to a cooler running temp plug and also replaced the fuel filter and I also looked at the choke, same problem. Where would I begin looking at the ignition?
