Bike: 1983 Pantah 600

They seem to go on ebay for around £1500 IIRC, seen silly prices in other places

it depends upon its condition but anything from £1500 to £3000 ( more if you are crazy), just remember Pantah's weren't the most popular bike even when new, the styling was from an era when Ducati lost it a bit and there was competition from the Laverda Montjuic and Moto Morini classic prices tend to be linked to how much you wanted one at the time and in the Pantah's case i don't think there would be that many

Saying that other bikes from that era like Monty's are now gong up in price quickly and 500 Pantah prices may follow but i wouldn't risk spending a fortune on a restoration

A lot of the parts are shared with other Italian bikes of that era (laverda's and Moto Morini), brakes ( seal kits now hard to find), forks, instrument parts and more, i used to look for scrapped Pantah's when i was restoring a Monty as Pantah parts always sold for less than Laverda parts.

Would beg to differ - Pantahs were very highly regarded in the magazines and were far superior to Montjuic's and morini's - of course I'm very biased, bought my mk 2 at 18, and had it for 8 years, love to get it back (A815 CPJ)

Agree the mk 1, slab sided pantahs were a bit off!

By the way Gizmo, note your a fellow Paul Smart owner, did I meet you (and wife) at the Harrods (Ducati Pen Launch) event back in Summer 2005, when Paul Smart was a no show?

Oi! My first Ducati some twenty or so years ago was a lovely 'Slab sided' Mk1.
Still got it - albeit now lodged with a mate to provide him with some classic biking pleasure.
IIRC the only major difference between the two was the fairing, which looked a shade too big for the bike on the Mk1. Nothing a decent paint job couldn't disguise.
Which was more than could be said for the 'orrible (IMHO...) square brake light and indicators on the Mk2..!

Agree that they were well thought of - still have the magazines to prove it. I could just as easily have ended up with a Laverda Monjuic - it was all down to what came up first. As it was the Pantah I ended up a life long Ducati owner. Would still like a Monty in the stable though.

Oops, back to the OP
A 25 year old bike with FSH is pretty impressive.
I'd say that condition counts for as lot - as can originality if that's your thing. I prefered the K&N filters & Harris 2-1 that my bike came with.
With most Ducatis the first and last versions of any bike seem to be the ones to go for if you can. For a Pantah that's the silver Mk1 500 - which is what you seem to be looking at - or the red/green 650.
The 500's were reputed to have a fragile gearbox (straight swap with the later gearbox) but I never had any such problems. The only failures I had with mine in the ten years that I ran it were electrical - dicky starter motor/solenoid plus a failed ignition switch. Other than that it ran like (rather loud!) clockwork
I've seen rough ones go for as little as £1000. I'd expect £1500 as a minimum for a reasonable one, up to £2500. Anything above that needs to be pretty mint.
I've don't really understood why Pantahs don't seem command better prices. They are pretty reliable and when not most spares are pretty easy to get hold of. They have a fair turn of speed, have decent handling and can look and sound great.
Not only that they are the first of the modern Dukes and the marque wouldn't exist without them. I guess it's all about availabilty - I reckon prices can only go up, albeit slowly.

Cheers

Rob
