Faint burning smell - Clutch?

There is a faint burning smell what only seems to happen when using the clutch a lot in heavy traffic.

Could this be the clutch? Is this normal?

Maybe its slipping a little and overheating, strip and check condition of plates.

Bike: 1997 Ducati 916SP

With the bike on the race stand (ie. wheel off the ground), remove the clutch cover (if you don't have an open one you can see into), and start the engine. Put it in first, let out the clutch and the wheel spins, now pull in the clutch and the wheel should come to a stop (therefor it's releasing fully).

That's only if the problem is when you're sitting there while holding in the clutch, not then taking off, etc.

IF this is the unique smell of 'Ferodo' type brake or clutch material that you are referring to, then it's not uncommon. On a warm, still day, in heavy traffic, this smell can hang in the air. Most vehicles produce it..!
