Oil quantity?

Was just on the way home from Paris and though the old girl was running a little rough but didn't think to check the level until I got home. Realised I've probably done 500 odd miles with very little oil (well below low level line).

I therefore have two questions, is it likely to have done any damage and just how much oil will I need to put in?

Thanks

Damage wise, unless you strip it down I guess only time will tell.
Probably best to drop the remainder of the oil and check for dreaded metal particles. Change filters and treat the old girl to new oil.
I hope all will be ok.

If the oil light did'nt come on on your way back, that can only be a good sign.
When you change the oil, taking off the oil cooler and draining that (around .7ltr of old oil stays in there) will get rid of more filthy oil, and is not difficult to do.

Nop, no oil light. Just topped her up as I don't have all the tools to do a filter change right now, and she needed .75 L. So I'm assuming that not too bad?

Question about filter changes. What kind of tool do you use to tighten the filter?

Found a very interesting bit of info on the net that reckons ST2s burn .2L - .4L per 1,000K. So it's probably a good yard stick to go by in terms of topping up over distance.

Thanks chaps.

Hi Mini Mo,
I changed my oil yesterday and with regards the new filter, hand-tightening is sufficient, I believe. You shouldn´t overtighten them. I actually managed to twist my old filter off by hand, although had to shout and scream while doing so! I thought it would have been much too difficult.
You should check the torque settings for the sump plug though as I believe there is a proper setting for that. I did mine up by hand as I don´t have a torque wrench .
Hope that helps .

Regards,
Richie.

Oil and Filter change

Just changed my oil and filter Man was that filter tight!
I have a webbing oil filter removal tool and I managed to put some serious dents in it before it came of. I dont consider myself weak but I had doubts that I was going to be able to get the damn thing off. There were some noises similar to RichieW's.

Thumbs up Oil fitler removal tool

Just bought a removal tool from an ebay seller, who happens to live less than a mile from my work.

should be a lot easier for the next oil change, no more screams and groans hopefully!
