A24 Camera Vans

I just got a letter this morning about doing a little over the speed limit on the A24 at Beare Green.I was very lucky that it was a community speed incentive camera, and not a police one, otherwise I would be getting a £60 fine and 3 points.

I thought you guys should know as I know a few like Alan and Jez (and wife), come up from Brighton through that way, so be carefull, and look out for the vans.

P.S I'm normally the first person to see a van in the distance, but I didn't see anything on the day it said it occured and that was the Sunday 27th Jan.

What the heck is a Community Speed Incentive?! I'm down the A24 a fair bit and tend to shift where appropriate so more info please!

Arn't these a bunch of civilian do gooder volunteers who believe that speed is the biggest problem on the road and have nothing better to do? They appear to be retired people and they stand at the side of the road in flouro jackets and clipboards looking very officious brandishing a hand me down obsolete radar gun provided by plod or one that they have bought themselves.

They take down the numbers of vehicles that their equipment indicates are speeding and report them to the Police who then write to give you a ticking off and threats of further action if you do not desist. I do not believe at present that they have any legal standing and cannot issue tickets - although i believe that there is a push on to get the law changed to allow them to do so. Imagine how good that will be, some vindictive non driving pensioner defending his little bit of road against the speeder! look out for the telltale signs, picnic chairs and thermos flasks.

Best change down to a low gear, dont exceed the limit and let them hear how good the Termi's are at high revs and low speed!

I saw quite a lot of them during commuting/school opening time when i was working in the Yeovil area.

Perhaps someone will put me right if that is not the case

I'll be looking out for them in future so I won't get a red card, but it didn't really say in the letter what would happen if you did.
Perhaps there is a site somewhere ?
