Worcestershire, Shropshire and Wales

this is one of my faves, has it all i think. twisties,mountains,seaside,nice views and cafes.
start in kidderminster then head up the a456 untill it meets the a49. follow this to leominster, then take the a44 to rhayader(stopping at crossgates cafe for a drink), then the a470 to llangurig then the a44 to aberystwyth(both roads a470 and a44 have some excellent twisties). an alternative is to take the road left signposted a4120 devils bridge just after the dyffryn castell pub and stop at the bridges or woodlands cafe. also the halfway inn along this road used to be bike friendly. follow this to aberystwyth.
the return is from aberystwyth take the a44 to llangurig again this time take the a470 to llanidloes then the a489 to newtown. from here take the a489 to craven arms(harry tuffins cafe is a good stop). turn left at the mini roundabout onto the b4368 follow this to morville then the a458 to bridgnorth and back to quatt and the cafe.
this is probably a popular route if the amount of bikes you see on a sunny sunday are anything to go by. but its just a nice few hours out on nice roads with stunning scenery.

I share your enthusiasm for the roads in this area. Travelling up to Tywyn I go via Bridgnorth, Shrewesbury, Welshpool and take the B road past Tal y Lyn Lake. On the journy home I usually take the A470 down through Wales, a fabulous route all the way to Abergavenny and the traffic is usually quite light.

yeah, the a470 through the brecon national park is nice.

That route , take's in some of my favourite road's too ...
Normally head toward's Llandovery A40 , on'twards Builth Wells A483 , turn off at Beulah B4358 & head to Newbridge on Wye (got to be one of the best biking road's ever !!! ) . A470 to Rhayader , on to Llangurig & A44 to Aberystwyth ...

Normally av a cuppa & complete the above in reverse ...

It's a lovely route inded. Sadly, that part of Wales has been a no-go area for me on summer weekends over the last few years simply because of the very heavy police presence and the specific targeting of motorcyclists for speeding, cans, visors, numberplates etc. There are usually no fewer than six camera vans deployed in mid wales on many sunny weekends, specifically targetting bikes, and often police pull EVERY SINGLE bike on a stretch of road (Brecon - Abergavenny usually) and check cans, visors, plates etc, issuing rectification notices and fines to pretty much everybody.
I take my business where I'm wanted these days!

Sadly I have to agree with Zimbo, Great biking roads ruined by a manic obsessive!

The only weapoin we have is to deprive the area of our custom, and hope that local people pressure for a change of regime.

I put just over a 1000 miles on my bike last summer between kington, abber, and borth and hand on heart I never saw one police camera van, Police car or Police bike all summer. May be I've just been lucky but imop it must be some of the most un-policed roads in the country other than where I live in herefordshire where traffic police are rearer than skinny woman !!

I've never had any trouble on the rural roads, but been through several mobile speed traps in the Abergavenny area.

I've never had a problem with the law on these road's either .
I never go up that direction on Sunday's though !

I have been up that way on Saturday's , but mainly during the week (one of the only benefit's of being a shift worker).

i also can honestly say that ive not had a problem with the traffic police in the area. but a friend was pulled for filtering through traffic in newtown!
i find that if you go early enough( ie get to aberystwyth for about 8.30) the roads are quiet. and you can get back home early enough to keep her indoors happy, thus earning more brownie points to go and play the next weekend.

ha u just be careful they put themselves where u cant see them in hereford

there are plenty about just make sure u keep your eyes open

i went for a ride to brecon last week tuesday & i seen x2 t5 volvos 1out of site i just seen it pull in and parkup. and also on sunday in abergavenny i seen a unmarked mondeo st220 apart from the boot. it had pulled an r6/r1 just off the roundabout. getting stopped buy the plod can be a paine but lots of bikes dont have tax mots or insurance & some ride with a death wish up&round brecon/abergavenny

No wernt me padge. The 749s went 2 years ago and I now ride a black Buell Uly (1200 V twin) but do get to Cross gates regular
