Nurburgring Insurance
Hi all,
Just tidying up a few loose ends prior to the trip and called my insurers (e bike insurance) to confirm that I have cover to ride around the ring. Explained that we are a "mature" group and would be riding around on a public day and under instruction. Further explained that at no time would we be involved in any form of motor sport / time trial / competition.
Just received a very nice e mail explaining from e bike insuracne stating that I would not be covered as The Nurburgring is a race track. Can't argue with that I suppose as you only have to check out "You Tube" to see what goes on!
So, as loads of you must have been to the Ring or may be considering going - can anyone offer any words of advice regarding insurance or do you just take a chance and hope that the 42 seater coach and the 200 mph Porche 911 sees you in time?

There is alot of track insurers about, alternativly look at Ben Lovejoy and it has a section on insurance.
I have heard of a few people not declaring anything prior to going, having an off and then arguing with the insurer as it is technically a toll road, and there is nothing in the terms and conditions saying you cant ride on a toll road so have had there claim settled. But that may be just hear say, i got quoted £110 when i requested insurance for the day at the ring, cant remember who from now though, i just googled trackday insurance and got a few quotes.

I did 3 days on the Ring last year, never gave the insurance thing a second thought. It is technically a toll road, you have to have a road legal bike to use it, race bikes are not allowed on it therefore surely its a road and you should be covered?

read my insurance thread..
In the event of a claim find out how much you will have getting the claim settled. Ive discussed this is 916 chat under the heading, "Mr.Magoo wipes out my 916"..

You will find it almost impossible to get cover at the Ring. You may find it worded that one way toll roads are also not covered. I only know one The Nurburgring.
Nearly all days are public days as its only a racetrack for a hand full of events.
Training facility at other times.
Good luck in your quest, but the easiest way and cheapest is be carefull and don't try to hang on to the quick guys.
Don't go round in the wet either. Other than that you will love it. 21 euro a lap this year 70 for 4 laps

As others have said, on public days the ring is a one-way public toll road and the normal rules of the road apply. Your vehicle must be road legal, taxed and insured. You overtake on the left. You obey the speed limit at Bridscheid (honest guv!). The police get involved when accidents occur. Therefore unless your insurance specifically excludes "one-way toll roads in Germany" or similar, you should be covered.
My car insurance policy (Swiftcover) contains the exculsion, my bike policy (eBike) does not.

WOT - No Insurance?
Thanks for that guys.
Some interesting theories there. I've mentioned this to other members of my party and it appears that we're all in the sh*t ! None of us are covered to ride around the Ring. aaaggghhhhhhhhh !!!
My mate has a spanking new Beemer and is with Bennetts - and they've just given him the big thumbs down
They've all had a look at this site and considered your comments and there's a bit of head scratching going on at the mo.
I'm sure 90% of riders of the Ring go around without cover - some aware and most not with everyone just hoping for the best.

I was aware when I went round, its your first time going you will not go balls out, its a formidable place.
Remember you are not racing so just go and enjoy it. After a couple of laps you will be able to squirt it down the fast straight bits and be careful on the corners.
After you have done the 90 deg right hander which is Bergwerk, you have 4Km of 130+ flowing sweepers.
So have your fun on that part in relative safety, as there is too much to learn in one visit.
Don't take this as preaching please, its just my opinion from my 25 laps.

You will love it but do be v careful in the first few (dozen) laps. I went there a few years ago and did 2 courses each 2 days long when the ring was closed to the public and we were "taught" it section by section. That showed me why I had gone off twice in the 2 laps we had done on our own when we arrived!! It's a very unforgiving track, armco then trees are the run off area. Having said that it is also an experience that you'll never forget. Enjoy (I'm NOT jealous at all).

i have been going to the ring for 8 years now.
i had a big crash there in 05,it is a public road al said and done, all be it a toll road.
its not a race track as you are not aloud slick tyres,or race pipes.
be aware if you do crash there you will have to pay for the track closer, oil cement, marshals and barrier if you hit one, this is where the money racks up.
as i crashed on someone elses oil i didn't have to pay anything.
so make sure you have your E111 just incase you end up in hospital.
have you passport, licence and insurance on track with you as if you come off the police will be called and it does not worked the same as over here.
you be demend at fault and maybe asked to pay a fine so to speak as i was 500 euros but dont worry as if it not your faulf they will sent it back to you as they did me.
i filled my bank details out wrong so they could not pay it into my account,so they phoned me and asked me if it was ok to send a cheque.
so if you all legal then there will not be a problem.

Thanks for you comments guys. Loads of tips to take on board here and I see that you've all been around this particular block more than a few times and survived to tell the tale which is promising. I'm sharing this with my non Ducati friends in my party to consider all your advice. Maybe if its wet we'll just find a bar
David and Keith - have you seen the euro rate at the moment - Someone told me today its about 1.2 to the £ !! GREAT !

We are going on the 16th April (portsmouth to Le Harve) and return on the 22nd. Doing a bit of sightseeing and watching the bikers cup at Spa en route. Thanks but we have accomodation sorted but I'll make a note of your contact who I'm sure will make us welcome in the future.
