What to do in a stall
HI All
The 848 will be in here in a week or so and since there have been some stalling issues I thought I would see what the best practice is (never happened on the gsxr before). Fingers crossed mine wont - expensive but easy fix though - termi time
So say I'm sitting at lights and it stalls - easy, if in gear the bike will lurch and so quick clutch to ease her off, shift to neutral, then start her up. Thing is I have heard when decelerating on a down change it may occur also (common 1098 prob) so what would I do? I am still quite new to riding so I dont wanna panic.
What would I do? I assume pull the clutch in to coast then tun on whilst rolling then finding the bite and ride on? Thing is I assume when engine cuts out the bike will lurch again so if this happens below 35mph which i've heard it does, how much artificial braking will I get?
Ta in advance

as far as i know
well it depends which gear your in with any stall doesn't it if your engine is stopped and you let out the clutch in 1st it'll lock up the rear. If you dump it in 2nd while your rolling it should bump start it, as far as am aware.(not while its banked over tho its a bit jerky) as long as you clutch in at the lights after a stall it should start on the button shouldn't it? or does the electrics prevent you starting without turning it off and on again?
I had a problem with the alternator a little while back on one of my bikes and when you pulled in the clutch it died so when i was going round a stupid tiny round about and changed down to first it locked up the back and made a decent arc on the road. but going down hill it died at lights and had to be bumped in second. so i suppose the same applies?
Andy.

I'd say if in doubt, knock it up a gear first until you know what's what. Same applies if you ever hit a false neutral. Once you get to know the bike it'll be less of an issue.

Not at all, just advising a nervous rider on how to deal with it, not suggesting for a moment that it's ok. If the bike's faulty then it should be sorted, gratis, by the dealer.
Lots of people seemed to accept it as just part of 749 ownership but it's not, properly set-up they don't stall at lights etc. Unfortunately a lot of dealers, even some official dealers, don't know how to set them up properly. Mine did it until I changed dealer.

I did a test ride on a 1098 that was both stalling and trying to keep on accelerating at different times.
At one point I throttled off coming down to a roundabout and it kept going so pulled the clutch in and changed down then not having noticed it had stalled I dropped the clutch and slid very sideways down the road (still upright).
My friend behind thought I was showing off trying to back it into the corner!

Absolutely, I agree 100%. If it's a fault with the bikes, it should be sorted, if it's a set-up fault, it should be sorted, but meanwhile Flex wants to avoid chucking it down the road until he gets it back to the dealer!

Mine does it occasionally, when it's cold and I'm just coming to the lights at the end of my road.
Here's what happens, I drop down from 3rd to second...All OK, I go from second to first (15-20 mph) as I roll up to the lights. If it stalls, pull the clutch in straight away to stop the back locking up (which it does straight away on cold tyres). While I'm still rolling I just press the starter again and she fires back up. Knock it in to neutral and wait for the lights to change.
Mine is usually fine after that, it's only when it's cold or hasn't been used for a week or so.

Thanks guys. I do appreciate all comments so keep em coming.
Problem is here in Cyprus the dealer is brand new and has no experience with Dukes. I am not entirely happy but what can i do. New gsxr is horrid, r6 - harder than the duke, honda doesnt fit me right, kwak too rev happy.
Besides I want the duke and love the duke so passion is what ducati ownership is all about.
I just hope i dont come unstuck so if in doubt, clutch in then!

Well after writing here after about 3 or 4 years without stalling wot did I do?
Filtered past about 10 or so cars in both lanes to the front on the new bike second time out (thinking am the big man). Lights on red green man on, flicked into neutral. Green man goes, clutch in down to first, lights change-- "dunk" stalled. New bike- little panic, clutch in fire it up and give it some beans to hide my shame! I'd like to blame it on the 848 "stalling problems" but that's a lie. It was me

I pulled up to a giveway line at the top of Glastonbury High Street today, slightly uphill and waited for passing traffic then..............
You guessed it, so in with the clutch left it in gear and she fired first time, can only put it down to coldish engine , she'd shown 50 degrees before stopping to pick up Easter Eggs and birthday cards from Woolies, so only a 5 minute stop!!!
So, was it me, was it a coldish engine, was it because I'd put the Db killers in to stop frightening the neighbours? Stalled and fired up no issues, rode her home without further incident. So if it happens to you I'd not worry about it, put it down to whatever reason you like, but just move on.
