A "mealie" is a Southern African word for corn or corn on the cob.. Can't see where it was used and in what context though...

Thanks Stuboy: in this case the fishing bait interpretation is the correct one I think. Paivi (of the gecko avatar) has mentioned them before, and I am pretty sure they are mealworms. Paivi can give us the definitive answer

Did somebody mention mealies, aka mealworms, my staple diet? Any strawberry jam going, too?

Can I thank you!!?

I feared I was going to run the risk of winning the award at Ollies National Meet for the most dropped bike.......

If you are going on Saturday I wonder if Ollie can assign us our own car park away from anyone bikes

Sweetpea, I am happy to have been of service. It may be, though that I'll have no oportunity to park my bike at Ollies. I may have to come in the car if the foot doesn't go down in time. Wouldn't miss it though.

Dropping a Duke <horror, horror>

Have to say, have not dropped my bike since i passed. Idiots running into me notwithstanding. How? By being really, really cautious. If I'm not confident, paddle. And get the pillion off first! Why take a chance. Humiliation can't hurt. A dropped bike can.

You may think its almost 0mph, but if you got your foot trapped, it sounds like you didn't have a chance to slow it down. The Dukes are probably more resilient cos they have a springy steel trellis frames. The cast aluminium of Jap bikes get twisted easily. Go to a workshop to have it checked for alignment. Being steel, it should be quite easy to bend back.

O, about the knee down remark. Its not as preposterious as it seems. My local HG chap was telling me how he was practicing in the car-park just doing tight circles at 10+mph.

at walking speed, I don't use the front brake, only the rear. I would cover the front with one finger though.

Apart from that, if I were going into a car parking space, I would paddle it in backwards so I could ride out going forwards.

Trail the rear brake - will give you 100% more stability for low speed control

Ducbird.....trail the rear brake, keep your mits away from the front brake lever, look at where you want to go, rather than where you are now, relax, dont hold your breath (it makes you tense) and practice gentle throttle control.....repeat after me.... you'll be fine!! - As Harrie would say..

Keep your hand wrapped around the throttle with your fingers UNDER the brake lever (only for walking pace turns mind) balance with the clutch and trail the rear brake as suggested. You should get the hang of it quite quickly.

Keeping your fingers covering the brake lever is tempting fate at this speed as your instinct will make you grab the lever if you feel your getting it wrong or want to stop.
